I’m a little exhausted with all that is happening with the scene the last few weeks, how about a feel good story folks?

My son came to me in September and asked if he could take one of our 22’s and make a custom stock for his final project. TBH, at first I was a little reluctant because I had never made seen anything made from wood so intricate. Was it possible? We wouldn't have access to a lot of fancy tooling, I’m a steel guy and the high schools are pretty limited. But i figured it would be a good life experience to go through the planning process and have him think through to a final product.
We choose on of my rifles that I inherited when my dad passed away (Ithaca). The biggest reason we went with this rifle was looking at the inletting, it seemed to be the easiest out of something newer (10/22).
Anyway, he cut out the blank, brought it home where we used a lot of jigging and a router to inlet the stock. It was a high patience job for sure. But it taught him that with some thought, really anything is possible. After the inletting he took it back to school where he shaped it, sanded, and final finished.

Well that does make for a feel good story.. another young gunny learning and seeing a project through. Hats off to him (and dad) because I wouldn’t be able to do the intricacies of inletting a stock. Grandpa would be a proud man to see what he’s crafted

That’s awesome. 20 years ago when I was his age I too built a stock as a high school project. It’s not near as nice as yours, but it’s sitting in my basement. Where has the time gone!

That’s awesome! Looks great. I remember trying to customize an old BSA single shot .22 stock when I was 14 or 15ish. I was going for a skeletonized look. Needless to say it didn’t work so well and is no lender with us….lol! I always feel a sense of accomplishment when my kids do something firearms related totally unprovoked by me. Good work to you sir and him. Also agree we need more feel good.

Amazing! My son in gr 12 built me a large wooden lawn chair, a folding table and a stool. All items still used on a daily basis. He fell in love with building things manually, especially out of wood. The kids do learn something in school after all.
