PEI Conservation Officers Charged with Shooting Near Homes

It's the Maritimes, corruption, nepotism and fogducking runs deep there.

The brother of Bre-X scandal geologist John Felderhoff was IIRC, a Nova Scotia MLA and he was convicted of shooting at a CO decoy deer at night.

That's why they vote Liberal.
 
It’s possible they had “a spot” that was legal, maybe at the back of a field along a wood line or something, that became illegal without their knowledge when someone built a house on the other side of the wood line 🤷‍♂️
 
A number of years ago one of our deer hunt group members brought his nephew, a wildlife biologist in the states, to the hunt. Part way thru the week MNR officials arrived at camp to " interview" him . Turns out, although Canadian, his primary address was in the states and he had been applying for years for resident's licences to hunt using his fathers address. Not only deer but moose ,turkey and waterfowl as well.
We were pissed when we found out because up till then we had a good relationship with the local game warden. He fought it with a high priced lawyer because of his job, cost him supposedly $10,000, got some of the charges reduced but lost his hunting privileges for 5 years. His job contract was not renewed when it came up the next year. The uncle also was retired from our group.

Umm don't you mean to say load your shotgun? Can't use a rifle for migratory...

But their job is to enforce the very laws they broke. I'm sure plenty of hunters and anglers have used the "I didn't know" defence with these two COs and I wonder how many of them were let off with a warning?

At the end of the day, they are entrusted to enforce wildlife related acts, laws and regulations, you would expect them to know them well. Good on PEI COs to request help from the RCMP in order to remain transparent.
 
A few decades back, I was wandering around, testing out a new .22 rifle down on the Milk River along the Alberta/Montana border. I came across a hand-painted sign that said. "No Shooting 1/4 mile From Ranch House." I walked around there for most of the day. It was spring, nice and sunny, whole hillsides of cactus in bloom, plenty of fossils, jackrabbits and deer. Never saw anyone else and never did find a ranch house. I hear the Milk River has now pretty much dried up.

PEI was a much cooler place 30 years ago. It was very common for people to take their rifles and shotguns out and blast away in a potato field, on a beach or off a boat. No one complained.....you might have a neighbor hear the shots and come over with his own gun to join the fun. A couple decades before that folks were shooting ice off of trees and power lines with rock salt.

I can remember my grandmother taking the 22 out all pissed off and blasting at squirrels in the yard. (they were getting in to her cupboards) My grandfather taught me to shoot his 303 in the field just behind his house....many rounds, never a peep out of anyone.

I'm guessing they weren't jump shooting geese in a field....
