For those of you that have made the switch to monolithic bullets, I am wondering does your accuracy improve after a certain amount of shots are fired?
(for lack of better words, I am curious if a barrel "shoots itself in" after getting used to mono bullets?)

Personally, after a ladder load development, approx 15rds, I found my load with monos. In terms of your barrel “accurizing” after - certain amount of shots, too many variables to answer that even in a theoretical sense…..
Load development is a much better way of getting your monos to group.
I had heard myths that you need to clean your barrel down to bare steel when switching from cup and core to monos and vise versa.
For what it’s worth, my 308 shoots Barnes 150 ttsx at max charge into a 3/4” at 100yds with a max charge. I achieve the same result with 150gr interlocks with a mid charge

Some people say that a barrel should be stripped clean of all jacketed bullet copper fouling before firing mono copper. There is no hard evidence to support this but I believe it to be true from personal observation with my guns. Of course there will be way too many variables to substantiate this but it has been discussed on a number of shooting podcasts. The reality is they are different in lubricity due to the different hardness of the copper. Cheers

I heard that too. But my 458 win mag for exemple shoots the “same” poi with the 350gr Speer hot-cor and Hornady 350gr ECX, shoot a group with one and shoot a group with the other one no cleaning in between. But I’m not sure if it is fluke, if it is like that for all rifles of just some rifles!

I absolutely concur with you. My Xbolt 6.8wstrn shoots the same with factory loads. However after cleaning out fully the copper will group tighter in that rifle. Stainless 26" 1 in 7" it seems to prefer the coppers but is a good shooter with both. It will eat anything I put in it really. I test fired a brand new Winchester XPR 6.8wstrn with some handloaded 165 ABLR's last weekend that blew me away for such an inexpensive rifle. I will be testing the theory over the next couple weekends and if your interested will let you guys know. Cheers

I’m totally interested!! I know my 458 with its awful trigger ain’t super accurate(1.8-2”@100m) better trigger and maybe a good clean could maybe make her shoot better with the monos!?!?!

This I found interesting. There may be something to this switch between gilding metal and solid copper bullets in at least some rifles. Notice the first group with buffalo bore ammo and then the second after nothing but mono’s were shot in between.

I’m convinced Barnes ammo is loaded every consistently. Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker 7mm RemMag BOSS shooting 140 TTSX Barnes factory load. Fired a couple rounds to get a rough zero. Then from a cold barrel fired 3 more into a 1.5” group @100m. Adjusted BOSS to suggested sweet spot and fired 3 more from cold barrel into under 0.75” group. Cold barrel again confirmed <0.75” group.
For ‘science🤪’ I changed the BOSS back to original setting. Fired a perfect 1.5” 3 shot group.
Back to sweet spot, cold barrel and fired 3 into just under 0.75” group with the bullet holes placement very similar to the first <0.75” groups.
That is some very consistent ammo.
NB; scope was a Bushnell Elite Tactical Hunter LRHSi 4.5-18x44mm. I believe these excellent scopes are made by LOW (Light Optical Works) Japan for Bushnell.

Those 140's must be cooking... Do you chrono? cheers

I didn’t have the MagnetoSpeed in my truck that day doh! I did chrono some 140 TTSX hand loads in the same rifle testing out Retumbo and Reloader 25 for their slower burn rates and near case filling volumes. Hitting 3350-3400 fps without pressure signs or the case heads growing 0.001” in diameter.

I have the exact same rifle with BOSS in 280 Remington. With a compressed load of 57.0 grains of IMR-4831 under a 120 TTSX W-W brass and WLR primer I get 3100 fps (22” barrel) and incredibly tight little 3 shot groups averaging 0.3” or less. Best of all these Brownings are left handed bolts! I sold the magnum but this little brother 280 Rem is mine forever.

A 120 grain 7mm TTSX or a 130 grain 0.308” TTSX for example punch way way above their weight class. That’s the beauty of these little mono destroyers, they don’t shed mass hardly but they do change shape into efficient tissue severing devices utilizing their mass and momentum to drive deep upping the odds of a quick, humane kill.
