Hello,
I am worried that I might have been phished or something. I followed the link on the main page of CGN to your website and tried to buy a scope. It asked me for my PAL and DOB and wanted me to set up an account with my address and phone #. Then it said I had to complete my registration by following a link sent to my email, but none arrived. I tried to reset my password, but it said my email was not registered. Then I dialed the 1 800 number at the top of the page (1-800-265-4259) but the woman who answered said it was not the correct number.

Did I just lose my PAL, DOB and all other info to a scammer?

I triple checked on my phone as it keeps the numbers I dial in a recent calls list.

As for the mistyped email, I actually have lastpass, which auto populates these forms and fills it in for me, so it is unlikely.

Does anyone know of another number other than their 1 800 number I can call?
It seems kinda weird that there is no address listed on the website either.

Yea. This seemed pretty 'red flag' like to me, but I have not bought a scope in over 10 years, so I figured that this was just another of our ridiculous government's attempts to add friction and drama to any purchase involving firearms. I mean the military uses scopes on their rifles, so why would any civilian need one unless he was trying to kill the maximum number of people in the shortest possible time..... Right? /sarcasm

It's pretty normal for PAL for scopes. Its not a government requirement but because Lots of stolen credit card were being used to buy expensive scopes in the past. Most retailers have the policy now to prevent fraud.

Interesting..... That would mean that retailers are calling in the number to validate and generating a record of the transaction with the Govt? If not, then there is absolutely nothing that would stop a scammer from putting in a fake number and DOB and City of birth. The retailer would have no way of knowing unless they called it in.
I mean I guess there is an argument that it would stop scammers at first, but I assume that once word got out that there was no validation, it would just be an annoyance for them to make up a number, dob and city.

On the flip side, if they DID call in these transactions to get a check, then the Govt databases would be flooded with as many transactions for people buying scopes, or selling them. Not sure that they would be able to tell how many actual firearms you were buying/selling if the data was full of scope transactions as well.

They can enter your PAL number into their computer and your info will pop the same as buying a firearm. While they dont generate a verification # they can still see all your info and check that it matches with the cradit card.
 
Ok. I figured it out.
Turns out that Canada's Gun Store is a subsidiary of a Home Hardware store out east. They answer the phone MCNAUGHTON Hardware. You have to tell them you want to speak to the Gun Store and they will transfer you.
I got the same story about large optics purchases that were fraud causing them to ask for PAL.

I am glad my co-worker was able to resolve your concern!

As mentioned, we are an independently owned Home Hardware located in a small town. In addition to standard hardware supplies, our location includes a gun store, LCBO, Service Ontario, auto parts, and a lumber yard.

Regarding the PAL requirement for optics, we request this information as a fraud prevention measure. However, as it is not a legal requirement, you are not obligated to provide it. If you prefer not to share these details, please contact us so we can find an alternative arrangement.

To clarify our process: we do not generate a reference number for the purchase of ammo, powder, optics, or gun parts. As noted by wildhog007, we use the RCMP business portal solely to verify that a license is valid. This process does not function like a firearm transfer; it simply allows us to ensure the order details match the license information.

Hopefully this helps clears up any concerns.
