Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season

Out this afternoon for a few hours before dark,on a 28 gauge hunt.Nothing in the bag.Did see many squirrel and deer tracks.One set of partridge ,rabbit and porcupine tracks.Did see two squirrels and a partridge.If partridge season would of been open,I would of had him in my game bag,for sure.Thought I would of seen more than one set of rabbit tracks.:(

Quite a bit of snow in the woods.Made walking a bit harder and noisy.

Was able to get out this evening for a couple of hours,with the Winchester Model 370 28 gauge ,for a rabbit hunt.Skunked again.:)Did see three partridge.One I could of had in the game bag,the second maybe and the third not at all.:)Where were these birds when the season was open?:)Did see two squirrels and about a half grown porcupine .Saw no rabbits,but did see some droppings in one spot.:)

Very nosy walking in the woods.The snow had a crust on it.

you shot all the rabbits last few weeks with that 28.:D
 
I unfortunately did not make it out hunting with my 28 last season. Only got out for deer once since the first controlled hunt back in November. Seems life gets in the way. When I did have the time the weather or my knee kept me from going
I have been doing alot of looking for a 28ga sxs though. Just to complete the common gauge set really. I have a nice 20 and 410 sxs that id likely grab first so a new 28ga would have to be nice. For now the a400 continues to sit in the case

Well my teachers never outright called me retarded they just said I was a very special boy lol


In a light 20ga there's not a whole lot of difference between it and a general 28ga in terms of handling. Yes a high grade 28ga will handle different than a general 28 as it should be truly scaled down. A 20ga has more options for factory loadings in both field and game loads especially when using non toxic.
The 410 is a true small gun. It has its uses when you dont need to shoot far or throw a lot of pellets to kill your game and it provides alot more challenges for clays
The 28ga as much as I do like it it is the slimmer sister to the 16 in that its matched by the 20 and cant beat the 12
Skeet kept it alive. Sure there would have always been a cult following just like the 16 but without skeet I think alot of makers would have skipped the model lines of truly scaled frames for it

I have a gorgeous aya model 107 that just sits there for the same reason as id pass up a 28ga unless it was stellar and stellar and 28ga dont mix with my current budgeting. Especially after last night's visit to the vet
 
Well lots of snow down now and more due Sunday.That would slow down the area I could cover on a 28 gauge hunt,but not stop it.The very cold weather,along with the snow, however is a stopper for me now a days though.:(

Is it an earlier or later 1100 28 gauge?What kind of price do they have on it?I have seen some pretty way out there prices listed for them of late.Doubt they are getting that starting price,but you never know.:)

In the past I had a 28 gauge Model 1100 ,that I bought new.Nice gun ,but a little heavy for my taste in a field gun.:)

I also bought a used 28ga Rem1100 2 years ago for $1,100 and broke the extractor on shot 17. A history of Crappy shells and a dirty chamber impeded extraction was my conclusion. Extractors for 28g are not the same as for 12g or 20g and scarcer than hen’s teeth. Extractors for Remington 1100 and 870 are the same. Extractors for 28g and 410 are the same.

Charges of Blasphemy for brybenn are not severe enough…I’d like to add “NO SOUP FOR YOU”!!!! How dare he bursts our 28g fantasy bubbles with all that reasonable goobledeegoop!!!!

My son’s 40th birthday just happened and to juice him up I told him that he was getting a Win Mod 21 SxS in 28g latter today over dinner at a nice Italian restaurant. I lied… he knows I lied…but still got all excited nevertheless!! See, that’s the magic of the 28g and the shotguns that are built for them….and that’s why we are planning to drive to CSMC as soon as this Ontario cold and snowy weather relents.

Do you still have the 28 gauge Model 1100?I sold mine many years ago.The gun I had brand new, cost me $650.00 back in the early 1990's.

Yes still have the Rem1100 and I bought a ‘matching’ Rem 870 in 28g also. When the guys at the club see me coming they try to hide all their pretty 28g before I see them. Then when I ask them ‘how much $$’ they give me some ridiculously huge amount. That trick doesn’t work because I STILL take that/their 28g home with me.
What’s a couple or few hundred dollars more at the end of the day. I get a lot more pleasure holding a beautiful shotgun in my hands out in the field as apposed to rubbing paper currency in the palms of my hands sitting at home on the couch.

No idea...do a search of Canadian gun sale sites and you'll find it.

Great question. Can’t remember but one of them is a skeet choke I think. The other is an extra ?? lol. The amazing thing in my rather limited experience is that 28g seem to pattern tighter than their designations. And if you reload a skeet choke will pattern 9’s tight, #71/2 turn it into what seems to be a modified and substitute #6 extra hard shot you get darn near full choke performance. My son runs a Perazzi with a skeet and IC choke and blows up crossing pigeons at 40 yards with 1oz #6 factory loads. Federal I believe.

What many shotgunners don’t realize unless they’ve shot hundreds of patterns on paper, greased steel and on live birds that you just can’t trust a choke constriction to coincide with its marking. And that is only a two dimensional representation of the pattern, the length of the shot-string is the 3rd and contributes greatly to how your pellets smoke clays, feathers or fur.
Naturally all 28g shooters are cognizant of these matters, like preaching to the choir. The learning curve starts with 12g, intermediate knowledge with the 20g and finally graduate level at 28g.
Naturally I didn’t mention 410, because thats a totally different animal, like trying to understand and work with a woman. lol cheers.
