Launching the Inaugural Dr. Valerius Geist CONSERVATION LEGACY AWARD
Dr. Valerius Geist was more than a scientist. He was a hunter, a fisher, a storyteller, and a mentor whose understanding of conservation was shaped by a lifetime spent on the land. He believed that real conservation begins with people - those who live close to wild places, who know their rhythms, and who accept the responsibility that comes with that relationship.
Val lived the life he spoke of. Hunting, fishing, foraging, and time spent in wild places were not hobbies or side interests; they were among his greatest teachers. He believed that harvesting food from the land, observing wildlife across seasons, and paying close attention to how landscapes change over time grounded people in a deeper, more enduring conservation ethic. For Val, stewardship was not abstract - it was practiced daily.
Throughout his career, Dr. Geist helped shape the foundation of modern wildlife conservation in North America. He authored more than 200 scientific publications and several landmark books, including Deer of the World and Wildlife Conservation Policy, and played a key role in defining what is now known as the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. But for Val, these achievements were never just academic. They reflected a way of life - one rooted in firsthand knowledge, responsibility, and humility.
Val was fiercely protective of hunting traditions and equally firm in his belief that those traditions must be grounded in respect, knowledge, and care for wildlife. He believed that the right to hunt came with an obligation to conserve - not in theory, but in practice. He was unafraid to speak hard truths, challenge prevailing views, or defend what he believed was right, even when it was unpopular. He brought scientific rigour to his work, but never lost sight of common sense or the wisdom carried by those who didn’t wear lab coats.
The Dr. Valerius Geist Wildlife Conservation Legacy Award has been created to honour individuals who carry that same spirit forward today. This award recognizes people whose conservation leadership is lived - shaped by time on the land, grounded in responsibility, strengthened through mentorship, and expressed through meaningful action for wildlife and habitat.
This inaugural year sets the foundation for a legacy award rooted not in titles or accolades, but in commitment, integrity, and lived experience.
