Got my Hands on a Sako 75 , laminate with stainless Heavy Barrel!
Going to set up with the Thermal Scope for Foxes..
I've got a good stash of 55 gr projies, one Unknown, Some Hornady Varmint 55gr BTSP and a tub of Varget.

I only want to use Varget an have been reading up on some recipes.

Have any of you tried this Combo with any success ?

I'm only hoping to Zero at 200 meters for point shoot in the night, won't chase max velocity but wanting a tight group.

Will be sure to add some photos once set up and develop load !
May also post photo of unknown 55gr SP for clarification

Our coyote hunting group at one time ran with a load of 36g Varget and 55g Hornady VMaxers out of our 22/250Rems. Excellent accuracy BUT…FYI…when Benelli bought Sako they turned out 3,000 ‘lemon’ barrels that were chambered in 22/250 and they shot like cr&p. After that fiasco Benelli financial management stopped interfering with Sako quality control management. Hope you got a good one!! Welcome to the world of thermal, there is a learning curve on so many different levels. Cheers !!

I bought a couple of boxes of hornady spsx 55 grain varmint bullets and got good results with varget powder. Shooting a savage axis 22 250. There was a warning that these bullets would fallapart in mid flight if you pushed them too fast. This was worse in rifles with 1 in 9 twists.

thanks guys, ADI says 33 to 36 gr 2208 for a 2.350 coal. obviously load coal as it comes with the rifle. will post photos of other projectiles to see what they are in new thread

The lead core will definitely separate from the copper jacket and you can see black squiggle smudges like bits of spaghetti on the target. I switched from the SX in the 22-250 for this reason. I like VARGET with 53 gr v max because they shoot so well and the BC is much higher but won’t work in slow twist barrels. 1/10” or quicker I believe. My24” barrel spits them out at 3680 with Lapua brass and 35.0 VARGET and ignited with GM210M with oal 2.410 which is mag length in my gun.

My buddy loaded the spsx in his 220 Swift. Couldn’t sight the rifle in as not one of the first 5 shots even made it to the 100 yard target. I recall watching blueish streaks in around the 40-60 yard area downrange.
Switched to Sierra 53g FB match bullets and at Swift velocities they were very effective on yotes.

You might have to experiment with bullets as foxes are thin skinned and dainty and easy to blow big holes in if your after the fur!! Awesomebeing ableto legally hunt at night. All we can do is raccoons at night with dogs and the hides are worthless and a pita to flesh out. Best of luck WL

Varget is a perfect powder for the 22-250, might not be top velocity, but it gets good speed, great accuracy, and temp stability.

As for the foxes, good luck finding a bullet that's fur friendly. Maybe a lighter flat base bullet will be the ticket. Flat base bullets tend to not exit.

No fur Trade per say, but we get $14 a Scalp..... :)
so the hole can be as big as ya want, just save his ears to nose to be identifiable!

used to be just the Tail... an should be. scalping sucks. but this year it has gone up to the $14 per scalp.

The most common Cartridge for the Fox when the Fur was about $30-40 a fox (olden days money) they were using .17 Remingtons.
very popular.

Tried varget, had better accuracy with W760, under 55 gr bullets. - dan
That's not written in stone DB. It really depends on the rifle. Especially twist rate and length.

WL, Varget should be just fine for 55 grain bullets just as all the good folks above have stated.

It's been my experience with different rifles, chambered for the 22-250, that twist rate and barrel length have a big difference in harmonics.

Heavy barrelled rifles not so much, but walkabout hunting rifles with normal profiles can be quite fussy.

At 34 grains, with a 1-14 twist rate, you're just getting into the "accurate" node. Bump it up a grain or use magnum primers, if you can get them, and the groups you're getting will get tighter.

Sounds like you're cull hunting, so accuracy just has to be enough to bring the animal down asap. If you're happy with the accuracy and it will work for you, stop where you are.

Working accuracy that is consistent is far more important on cull hunts than tiny groups. Tiny groups don't hurt anything, but when they aren't needed, time in such cases is money.

Keeping it all in perspective is the key.

I have used Varget, N140, and N150 with 50-60 g projectiles in the 220 Swift, which is ballistically pretty similar, at or near max loads. All with very good results. Premium style bullets are a must though. Had some cheep General Dynamics, (IVI} bullets that didn't like to be pushed that fast.
