Just wondering if any here , have any 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch ammunition ?I have a box of Western 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch ammunition as well as some loose Western rounds.Just bought a box of Peters 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch ammunition.Not sure just when it will arrive.It is the Peters box with the full fall scene and duck on the front.A real nice looking box.:)

I suppose with the 3 inch 28 gauge guns now being available,one could shoot this ammunition in these guns ,if they were of a mind to.:)

The Peters 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch that I bought are roll crimped.Peters did also make them with the folded crimp,when it came out.The Western 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch shells ,I just forget,which they are.They are packed away at the present time,but I believe they were rolled crimp.:)
 
That is what i thought i have 20 gauge in that length. They are that length because of the component assembly height I have done that many times with roll crimp loads. Good to go in a 2 3/4 chamber. The 28 and 410 shells can reallly benefit from hand loading roll crimping makes some load combinations possible.

Do not wish to argue with you,but a 2 7/8 inch shell should not be fired in a 2 3/4 inch chamber.The length is 2 7/8 after firing and the 2 3/4 inch is that length after firing.The length of the unfired roll crimp shell can be longer, as the roll crimp does not use as much of the shell length to make the crimp ,as is used in a star crimp shell.:)
 
A loaded 2 3/4" shell is 2 1/2" long a empty case is 2 3/4" you must have very short forcing cones in your 28 guns. 1/8" ? The worst that could happen is if you were useing a pump or autoloader the empty hull may hang up on the ejection port.

You could be right, but why take the chance on shooting a longer case in a shorter chamber?Does not sound like a good policy to me.Cannot say that I have heard any one, until now, advocate to use a longer cast in a shorter chamber.:)
 
^^^ I have an old Remington model 1900 in 16 gauge and according to the serial number it was made in 1905.
Anyway one day I took it in to Sights and Arms in St, Albert to have a new butt pad installed. Randy asked what was it chambered for I said 2 3/4 .... I think?
He put the chamber gauge in it and it has a 2 5/8" chamber. This is after I shot half a doz. boxes of 2 3/4 " shells in it and you know I never noticed the difference. Pulling the empties out was no problem. not tight or anything. Maybe I just got lucky or something. ;)
 
A question what chamber length were those shells used for back in the day that they were produced ? 28 were short back in the day the skeet game changed them to 2 3/4 i think. Factory all gauges come in different 2 3/4 lengths many differ but most are labelled 2 3/4 plus or minus. . That 1/8" is easly taken up in the forcing cone. Now 3" in a 2 3/4 chamber a whole different story a big no no.

The 28 gauge shells I speak of, are 2 7/8 inch.I have one 28 gauge gun that is chambered to use 2 7/8 inch shells.Other guns were chambered for it back in the day as well.To the best of my knowledge ,the 28 gauge 2 7/8 inch shells were discontinued sometime after the 28 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell was made the standard for skeet shooting.Since both the 2 3/4 inch and 2 7/8 inch 28 gauge shells used the same amount of lead weight.The companies stopped making the 2 7/8 inch 28 gauge shells.

The 2 7/8 inch 28 gauge shells were never meant to be used in the 2 3/4 inch 28 gauge guns.However, the 2 3/4 inch 28 gauge shells, could be used safely in the 2 7/8 inch chambered guns.:)

Have heard some fellows say they have shot 3 inch out of their 2 3/4 inch guns with no problems.Good,but you are taking a chance when doing it.in my opinion.No one that I have heard of ,until today ,recommends shooting a longer shell in a shorter chamber.Just not good policy ,in my opinion.

However, if there are those that wish to do so,all the power to them.Just do not want to be standing next to them when they do so.:)

Oh I agree and won't be shooting it again unless I find some shorter shells. I remember Tradex used to have the 2 1/2 inch 16 gauge but Tradex is no more.

Interesting info. Those 2 7/8 you have must be paper hulls? Do you know what model guns were chambered for 2 7/8" ?

Yes, they are paper hulls.None were ever made in plastic that I am aware of.They were discontinued before the use of plastic hulls,although they did make them with the star crimp ,when it came out.

The Winchester Model 12 and Winchester Model 37 were chambered for 2 7/8 inch shells.All Winchester Model 12 28 gauge guns had 2 7/8 inch chambers,even the later ones, that were marked 2 3/4 inch.The reason being ,all the 28 gauge Model 12 barrels were made at about the same time.Even when Winchester discontinued the 28 gauge Model 12 in the late 1950's ,there were still a lot of barrels left.Not sure ,but i believe Simmons bought those barrels.

As far as I know, the Ithaca NIB in 28 gauge and some Parker 28 gauge guns had 2 7/8 inch chambers.There were others ,just how many I do not know.

The standard for the 28 gauge at the time ,was a 2 1/2 inch shell, loaded with 5/8 ounces of shot.As it is today ,with those who are not in favour of a 3 inch 28 gauge shell,so it was in the time ,those who thought the 2 1/2 inch 5/8 ounce was all that should be used in the 28 gauge.When skeet made their standard 2 3/4 inch ,the 2 1/2 inch and 2 7/8 inch shells soon when by the way side.
 
Used to be right into the 28 gauge.Was kind of away from it for awhile and just getting back into it in a big way.I have lots of 28 gauge information ,boxes,old ammunition etc.,but at present time ,99 % of it is all packed away in boxes scattered around the house.

Always enjoy talking about the gauge and others views and ideas on it.Even if they may not align with mine.:)Power to the 28 gauge.Right on.Really showing my age with that.LOL

I guess you could say, I was 28 gauge ,when 28 gauge wasn't cool. :)

Well ,a person has to do what they think is best.For myself, I would never shoot a longer shell in a shorter chamber.:)
