BLR malfunction?

I have a pre'81 BLR in 308 that doesn't fire the first round but does fine when action is cycled for the second shot and so on. Load new magazine and the same thing happens all over again!
Is it the firing pin? What do you guys think?

1/ Has it always done this?
2/ If you thumbcock the hammer and hit the round again does it fire?
3/ How much of a gap between bolt body and bolt head do you have when the bolt is closed on an empty chamber and on a round?
4/ Is there a difference in the gap between the bolt head and the bolt body when you have a new, unfired round in the chamber and when you have a fired empty case in the chamber?
5/ Cycle an empty case into the chamber. How much does the bolt body move when you drop the hammer on a fired case?
 
The primer on the first round is barely touched and I will try to thumbcock the hammer next time I test fire it.

If your timing is out by one gear tooth you will be getting those previously mentioned problems. To confirm this close your action (empty), hammer back and see if you can push the bolt forward ANY amount. If it does move forward your timing is out and needs to be adjusted.

Just make sure when you reassemble your gun you do not adjust the timing too much resulting in a tight bolt closure but the lever does not follow all the way to the stock. This is a time consuming trial and error thing.

O.K. Guys I did as much as I could to test this BLR.
1-First round won't fire even when thumbcocked
2-There is no gap between bolt body and bolt head
3-No difference in the gap with bolt head when comparing empty chamber and with a round loaded.
4- This rifle has never been taken apart
5-This problem slowly started a couple years back
6-This problem isn't consistent; it does fire occasionally
What's next?

Seen something similar with BLR, this one fired every time when held vertical, as in straight up. It appears that Browning uses inertia type firing pin and the spring that holds it in the back of the bolt was missing.

Doesn not make any sense. Removing and replacing the mag should not have any bearing on the ability to fire.
If it's not been apart before, timing is likely OK, unless it'd just worn. I think we're looking at a firing pin related problem.
Most BLRs will not allow the trigger to be pulled if the action is not 100% closed.

I repaired one with a rough spot on the firing pin,which caused it to stick and misfire.This was a old rifle, why the problem took that long to show up I don't know.
Cleaning up the rough spot on the pin fixed it.

This rifle was bought new and is exactly 26 years old.
Problems surfaced only for the past couple of years, starting slowly and eventually getting worst.
Maybe a good cleaning job and inspection is in order!
