Hello I found a batch of older CIL .322 soft points recently. They were advertised as being for the 32-40. Is this bullet alright to use to reload 32-40? Please let me know if you have used these and how they worked. Thank you.

Got a picture? They might be for 32-40 or 32 Special. They will not necessarily interchange. You can usually tell if it's for 32Sp or 32-40 by the looking at the bullet.

I have an old box of CIL 170 grain bullets that are marked as for the 32-40 and I used them for 32 remington
they worked good for that

Curious why they wouldn't interchange??
Because the leades are different. Most 32 Special bullets will have a longer nose than will fit in most 32-40 chambers. Need a shorter, fast- tapered nose on the 32-40 bullet so it doesn't run into the lands. There is some interchangeability depending on rifle and bullet shape.

The case of the 32-40 is of course longer, but the actual bullets appear to be very similar, the cannular on the 32 bullet of course is in the wrong place but seating a 32 bullet deeper in the 32-40 case should work fine. I have a box of very old 32-40 & 32s & the bullet taper outside the case appear very similar & measures with a few thou of each other.

"Should". The speer 170gr 32 caliber wouldn't chamber in my M1894 32-40. When seated as deep as it could go before cannelure, it would not chamber.
