your top 3 favorite callibers for hunting

.30-30 Win, .303 British and 45-70 with 12G being an easy substitute for any of those.
 
well one I can be certain of, and that is a 260 Remington. You could give me a 6.5x55 instead and I'd be just about as happy, but the 260 is the one for me in the short action rifles. Anything from long range predator hunting, ideal for deer inside 1/4 mile, and can handle moose/elk in a pinch with good ammo and good shooting.

If I had to pick two others that I have actual hunting experience with that I like, would be the 243 Winchester for long range coyote hunting, and the 7mm Rem Mag for deer, moose, and black bear. Ive had great results with those two cartridges
 
Top spot goes to .308 Win. (.307 for my model '94 lever)
After that is .300 Win Mag and then 45-70.

The .308 is just too versatile to not take top spot. There are dozens of loads, as I'm sure can be said for many calibres, but it just gives me the accuracy I want with readily available components. Ever since I shot an FN at the range near Oromocto back in '69 I've almost had a fixation for that round, aka 7.62 X 51

The .300 Win Mag was a purchase I made on the spur of the moment at a sale on Stainless Stalkers at SIR about six years ago and it quickly became a favourite. Factory ammo with the BOSS is excellent but reloading is a breeze for accuracy too.

Finally, there's nothing like the satisfying THUMP that comes out of the muzzle of a 45-70 Guide Gun. Those who shoot it know what I'm talking about. Animals at the other end know too! 'Nuff said.
 
For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would even consider limiting themselves to only 3 calibres. There is nothing worse than being diametricly challenged.

no one is limiting you to 3 callibers the question was your top 3 and many hunters cant afford to have a large variety, so your top 3 favorite?
and many guys do limit themselves to 3 or less and put lots of meat on the table

270 and 300 Winchester magnum


I have others from 22 Hornet through 243 and 6.5x55 and various 30 calibre rifles, but the top two work for everything I hunt.
 
Upon reflection I may have to revise my list.I loaded up some 85gr hp and in terms of wanton destruction Gophers just dissapear:eek:.I loaded up some 100gr sp and mule deer just fall down:D.I loaded up some 125gr partition and put out a mooses lights for good:dancingbanana:.This was all last year sooo the correct answer to your question is

I only hunt deer so I'd take 308 and 270 and don't really need a third, but would throw in 303 Brit as I'm a sucker for a good enfield that stops deer dead.
