Several years ago, I bought a Tikka T3X Compact Lite in .308 based on the "General Purpose Rifle" concept. Similar to a Scout Rifle, but with much broader criteria. Essentially, it's a light, fast-handling rifle with reasonable accuracy.

Here's the video of the concept:

The base platform:
* Tikka T3X Compact Lite - barrel cut to 18.5" (would have gone to 16", but, y'know, Canadian gun laws)
* Leupold LPVO (1-4X with Firedot)

I'm thinking of upgrading the stock - I don't love the factory plastic - and I need some help with the stock/chassis selection. Looking for some ideas from the Gunnutz team to help. Not trying to build a precision rifle, so I don't need a fully adjustable aluminum chassis.

Selection criteria:
1) Should be lightweight - trying to keep the overall package weight around 7-7.5 pounds
2) Cheek riser/adjustable comb
3) Under $1000
4) Folding would be nice, but not mandatory
5) Factory paint/colour options are preferred. Trying to get away from the basic black. Preference only - not a deal breaker.

I'd consider a more traditional stock like the Cadex Tundra Strike or a chassis like the MDT Oryx. I'm quite ignorant of the available options, so hoping to get some help from those who can help.

(Not sure if this is the best section to post, but with the semi-autos being mostly gone from the picture, I thought a "general purpose" rifle might be the new "Black/Green" rifle)

the Oryx is heavy and uncomfortable for me.

what if you just added a $40 cheek riser to the factory stock (wink wink)?

What if you painted the stock yourself?
Fair questions. I'm absolute crap with a spray can, but I could give it a shot... YouTube seems full of good instructional videos on the topic.

I don't love the stock - it's a bit cheap and plasticy... But your point is well taken - why spend money when there's really nothing wrong with it?

Appreciate the perspective... Maybe funds are better spend upgrading my lever - which has no useable stock.

A sponge/manners camo is so easy to do. I may do one in the spring.

Sauer 100 or Mauser M18 in 308.
Add 1 LVPO of your choice.
Cut & recrown the barrel to 18.75.
----» Modern scout rifles.
10 rounds magazines are available.

Unless you go with a MDT HNT or something similar, getting something better than the factory stock is either going to add a ton of weight or cost $$$. For your intended purpose, i think some extra foam in the stock, or glass bedding the action, will increase rigidity, and provide what you are trying to achieve.

I wish Tikka would continue selling the ranch and other fast handling variants of their T3x rifles. Although for an all around rifle, the Battue with the built in irons, would be hard to beat. Although i would like to see it in an 18" and other calibers...

Park your pesos into a PR Precision Micro Chassis. Takes single stack OEM mags and weighs about the same as factory stock. Excellent designed folder and fully adjustable. If you know, you know.
Thanks!

This is not something I'd considered or was aware of. Definately "minimalist". And it folds!

Appreciate it.

PR Precision Micro Chassis = $1000+ and then accessories like TG and bottom metal ? Maybe buy a better rifle to begin with ?

KRG Echo.

Reasonable price (300 US), Tikka specific, 2.65pds, microchassis, mlok, adjustable LOP, adjustable cheekrest.

I shot one in .308 and loved it, nicer than the fieldstock from my perspective - and the Fieldstock is also pretty nice for the money.

Not sure why you need to run an 18.5" barrel on a bolt gun, 16" is the shortest you can go with a folder and remain NR.

As was said above, you aren't likely to swap the stock for a chassis (especially a folding one) and lose weight while staying under your price cap. A folding HNT26 is pretty much the only option for a lighter weight chassis that has a folder but it's double your budget. That PR Precision folding chassis could be an option but I don't think maintaining the stock mags is an advantage, if you're gonna get a chassis it might as well use AICS mags so you can run 12 rnd mags. If it were me, I'd be looking for an MDT LSS-XL with a fixed to carbine interface, add a folding adapter and a buffer tube with a Magpul CTR. I'd also add some mlok ladder panels to make the Al chassis nicer to handle in the winter. That should keep you around $1000 and give you a folder. If the folder isn't a must-have for you (I think it makes a lot of sense for a General Purpose Rifle) I'd go with an MDT XRS. It's pretty light but way nicer/stiffer than a factory stock, lets you run AICS mags and has an adjustable cheek rest while being quite a bit under $1000.
