Skeet in 90 to 110km Winds

Like wind on the golf course... generates easy excuses 😆
Today everyone shot 10-15% below their normal score. But we had a good laugh watching the strange things that the targets did. Some high house targets hit the ground 30 feet in front of the low house, and some low house targets made a big arc and came back towards the low house. Many targets made sudden 2-4 foot changes in altitude, just as a person pulled the trigger.

Like shooting 5 stand!

Shooting skeet in high wind is always fun. My local range is in a narrow valley with the wind forced perpendicular to the field either from station 1 to 7 or 7 to 1. We shoot regardless of wind conditions. There are times when a big gust comes the high house will be forced down and hit the ground before passing the low house or on the other side the low house is sent 50 ft in the air and completely stalls.

Doesn't help with score but keeps it interesting!

Our club in Hamilton is exposed to the wind and during a good blow its challenging not only to hit skeet targets but to stay on our feet. The trap shooters have it easier but they have an advantage staying on their feet…our average trap shooter weighs a 100lbs more than our skeet shooters. Im in the transitional zone. lol

Typically the wind comes from behind our high house, pushing the high house targets down, and the low house targets up, but when we get an East wind it messes us up worse, because we aren't used to it. When the winds are lighter, I shoot 410, when it gets nasty, I switch to the 28 gauge.

  To funny that is like switching from a Pea shooter to a BB gun. We shot a trap shoot in a ice storm with high winds everyone came in looking like a icicle. Young an foolish back in the day but it was fun.

The 28 gauge is a huge step up from the 410, it throws 50% more shot. When I still shot some skeet with the 12 gauge, my average with the 28 gauge, was about 1% lower than with the 12. I haven't shot 100 straight with either the 28 or 410, but I shot 99 with each last year, and I am old enough to collect OAS.

410 and 28 love both gauges just poking a stick. 99 Great shooting most can't do that with a 12 gauge.

Thats a bit too windy for me. I'll take 50-60km gusts and such but more than that is bordering on dangerous territory with winds that high. If the winds blowing into the skeet field you're getting pelted with clay fragments on those baseline stations.

Eye protection is mandatory.

Of course.

I prefer to not be hit anywhere, not just the eyes. In my experience even at 50km winds you're getting hit often by fragments on stations 1, 7 and 8
Even on a calm day, you often get hit with clay fragments on station 8, unless of course you don't break the clay. But if you are really concerned, skeet may not be the best discipline for you.

Nah, I love skeet. Just don't think its enjoyable in 110km winds. But perhaps that was exaggerated and we like it the same.
