Hi all,

I'm a new member and beginning to figure out this site, so not sure if this is the correct place for this post.

I would like to buy an M1 Garand at some point and understand that they're rarely for sale.

Any advice on where to look or watch and what to avoid would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

A quick Google search for "M1 Garand Canada" yields dozens of results. Be prepared to spend $2000-$3000+ for one.

If you're looking for one chambered in its original round (30-06), be prepared to drop around $5000.

If you're looking for one re-chambered in .308, you're looking at $3500. These are much more common than the ones chambered in 30-06 I've noticed.

Garands are not at all rare or hard to find, they're just expensive now. Average sale price today is 10x what they were 25 years ago, which is a pretty strong interest rate.

I don't agree that they are cheaper and easier to find in .308. I see more of them in .30-06.

Edited to add:
I see Intersurplus is selling .30-06 Garands right now, refurbed to VG condition for $3k.

Wow... I never should have sold mine back in 2007. I bought it at the (long closed) Milarm in Edmonton for... get this.. $425.00+GST in about 2002
Bought mine in Toronto (when we had a ton of gun stores before the 1990s bans) for $325. Matching Springfield. Sold it a few years later for $400. Went to rebuy when I got back into shooting in 2009. Laughed at the concept of paying $1,200 for a Garand.

Thank you all very much!
Agreed that it's a lot of money for sure. And there are apparently concerns that the feds will prohibit them.
I have a feeling that they won't get any cheaper in the long run.
Guess I have to weigh the value to me of an expensive bit of nostalgia against something that'll offer the same function for a fraction of the money.
I don't look at a 55 Bel Air the same as I look at a daily driver though...

Lol, I bought a bunch when Lever was selling those collector packs or whatever they called them. Iirc it was under $100 per rifle. Since none of my buddies didn't want to order them and do the mail order thing, I did all the leg work and fronted the money and charged them extra for theirs. I got a couple basically for free along with bayos, clips, accessories etc.

The new surplus Breda M1 garand Tipo 2 Italian in super condition isn't a bad deal at all, I paid about 2500$ back like 7 years ago at Marstar and it wasn't safe to fire and need to return back after, I bought like 2 of them actually.

I bought and returned the same unsafe garand from marstar. Can't bring myself to order another without looking it over first. Don't need the hassle and disappointment

Yeah, the disappointment really hit hard that time, Lol. I like to get another one but meh, I prefer my purpose built Scout m1a with m305 receiver and shorten the barrel to 18.5 inch.

The previous version of Marstar with the original owner tried to push false Italian Garands onto the market. They were cobbled together, unsafe and an embarrassment to everyone concerned. Marstar took a beating, especially here on CGN. The damage was done, and there are new owners. Same place and similar products, but not the same thing.

FWIW, I would shoot any 7.62 Garand offered. The genuine Italian rifles are factory converted and everything forward of the receiver ring is 1/2" shorter. I've fired a Danish contract Italian Garand with an aftermarket barrel. It is full size, and that 1/2" more barrel is everything between winning the match and coming last.

I bought my SKS for $150. The Russian model I have is going for almost 1k now. Glad I kept mine lol.

Current pricing is $2200 to $3500 for either 7.2x51 or 30-06.
You should be able to find a nice one for $2800.
For those willing to spend $5000 for one, message me and I will get you as many as you want!
Not me personally. Was at a gun store in NB (don't ask which, I don't remember. We were passing through the province and came across a gun store) with a friend a few years ago, and they had them chambered in 30-06 and .308. Guy explained that the 30-06 was the price it was because they're more rate.

Whether that's true or not, I have no idea. This was in 2023 I don't own one. Just went by what he told me.

Not a snowball's chance in hell that .308s are more common that 30-06s. And the only 30-06 worth $5000 is the one owned by Audie Murphy (maybe).

I could have bought and held lots of gold at well under $300/oz. The current price of Garands has me feeling double deja vu LOL!

I had an SKS. sold at the same time as the Garand. I was moving to NZ and they won't let those rifles into the country. I'd bought it at Lever Arms for... if I remember, about $75 at Lever, in the early 1990s
