I've got a question for you guys. This may sound strange but I suspect the employees of a gunshop I bought a revolver from fired a few shots while I was waiting for the transfer and sold it to me as new.

Now, I realize there might be a bit of dirt in the barrel from the factory. Thing is, this barrel was definitely fouled when I got it. I ran some patches through it and they came out black. There were powder marks on the breech face, top strap and cylinder notches. Every cylinder chamber was dirty.

I bought two new guns from them in the past, a 1911 and a 686, and they both looked new, with a shiny barrel. This one didn't. Should I be concerned (read: pissed off), or can it be that a new gun is this dirty from the factory?

Myself I consider any gun that is for sale to the first registered owner as new. That means to me that if it's in the gun store and someone wants to try it out a few times, I am ok with still buying it as "new". However it should at least be clean with a shine. You will see that with lots of private sales, that say "new in box". Lots are "like new" since they may have had a box our 2 fired.

Is it a Ruger?
I got one new that had black cylinders, and a dirty chamber, barrel.
I guess it's too much work for them or the shop to clean....

Nah, it's one of those new S&W PC model 629s. Thanks for the feedback fellas.

As you can see, I haven't bought many new guns. I'm basically trying to see if this is usual practice or not. Like I said, I understand that a gun is fired at the factory.

Hypothetically speaking though, would you be annoyed if gunshop employees handled and fired your brand-new gun during the couple of weeks it took for the transfer to go through? Or would you expect it?

I've only bought Glocks brand new, they included the two spent brass from the test firing but they were most definitely in new condition and very clean. I would be pretty p*ssed as well buying a brand new gun and getting it in that condition. I know a vehicle cost a hell of a lot more but would you except them giving you the keys if it was in the same filthy condition? The principle is the same.

Is there a range at the gunshop? How would they transport it? I've be pissed if someone took my gun I ordered off site to a range to play with it.

Personally, I'd courteously ask them why the gun appears to have been fired?

If it's bought and paid for, then it certainly shouldn't be fired by anybody but you. I would be ####ing pissed off. However, if you complain, I am sure you'll just meet a wall of denial.

Yes, I would be annoyed, but I don't think annoyed is the right word...I would ask for part of my money back!

Did you see/handle the gun before you bought it? Was it clean when you paid for it and dirty when you got it? Or did you have it shipped?

I got a Brand new 657-5 last fall , and it arrives dirty from testing at the manufacture. I think because they have to print them all now by shooting a couple of cartridge for some state law, that they dont bother anymore, IMHO , they should buy these new cleaning machine that clean the piece via ultra sound.
And send the piece clean to us, who spend big $$ to buy there toy

If it was shiny clean and new when you were in the store and bought it, then I'd be pissed off. Nobody should be firing your gun after you paid for it and are just waiting for the transfer.

On the other hand, if you left the store and thought about buying this gun for a couple days before actually phoning in with your credit card number - the store owner might have tried it out before you technically bought it. He should have cleaned it afterwards, but that's not worth getting upset over.

I wouldnt be impressed if the "new" gun I bought was fouled, although perhaps inspecting the gun before you purchase it will prevent this in the future (or at least give you "proof" that something is amiss)

as for the 2 weeks for the transfer.... holy crap, glad I dont live in Ontario

Yeah, they have a range and gunsmithing facilities on-site, which is part of the reason it wouldn't surprise me if one employee said "sweet piece, I'll just squeeze off a few rounds, no one'll notice". And you're right, courtesy is key, which is why I wanted to cool down for a couple of days and get other opinions before confronting the owner about it.

Thing is, I trust the boss-man, who, only days prior, was telling me how much he valued my loyalty and continuing business. I suspect one of his employees might have done it without his knowing it. When I tell him about it, I hope he'll bear in mind the money I've spent there in the past few months, and the money I'll keep spending there if I feel like I can trust him. Stonewalling me will only leave sufficient doubt in my mind to make me shop elsewhere...

That's the thing... I ordered it from him, when it arrived I drove 200k to check it out and confirm it's what I wanted, and then we initiated the transfer and he shipped it to me two weeks later. I'm 95% sure it wasn't visibly dirty when I inspected it, at least not as dirty as it was when I got it in the mail...

That's the whole crux of the question, isn't it? I wouldn't even have brought it up if I walked into the store and picked out a gun that had been test fired a couple of times, or if I waited a couple of days before getting it. They wouldn't even have had this one in stock if I hadn't ordered it. It was destined to be mine from the start!!

It's always taken 3-4 days max for me, this 2-week business was new to me, too!

Two questions: make of the revolver and name of the gunstore in question?

just mabey.....
