I noticed in the 10/22 sticky that you can just use a file and make your own auto bolt release, i was just wondering if any one has down this and if theres any tricks on doing this right. As a student i need to save all the money that i can, being able to make this should save me a few bucks, every cent helps as a student,

thanks

I tried it and it didn't work out..
I just pulled the whole part out and chucked it in the garbage, worked fine after that :)

Use a Dremel tool, file the bolt release as per the pic, as long as the top is not flat, you're good to go.
Great mod.
If you polish your trigger, etc, use 400 grit emery paper, no Dremel. Take your time. Re-assemble, shoot, do it again. No rush.

Tryed mod once and didn't work too well. Rounded slot out more with a chainsaw file second time,on same part, and worked great. Have done another since with no problem.

Rimfiresports sells the VQ one for 10 bucks with free shipping to Canada. Even if you already own a file small enough to fit, why waste your time modifying the factory one?

It is a very simple mod with a small file or Dremel. You can go to rimfire central and search for it and somewhere on there is a before and after pic,and instructions how to do it.

Thanks Guys! im going to give it a try, theres no way i can mess this up, you gave me alot of help, thanks again

At worst you just wouldn't have a bolt hold back. Can you shoot your gun with no bolt hold back? Yes. Is your gun safe without a bolt hold back? I don't see why it would be unless you are handling it unsafely in the first place!

i did mine with a dremel. works great, but if i bump the stock hard the bolt will close. i find its a small price to pay, intead of fiddling with the damn thing

I did it myself as well. I'm not very good at doing real work on guns...ask H Wally.

However, I did this myself, and managed to screw my shape up a bit where it doesn't look quite like it should. But it still works great. I love the Ruger 10/22. It's design is so brilliant...

I got my rifle, and in about 15 minutes I tore the rifle down, another 25 minutes later / 4 files later....I had an auto bolt release, easyest mod I ever did.

Well worth the tinkering.
