Hi guys, does anyone have an antique letter from the rcmp listing a Colt SAA in 44 special as an antique? Gun in question was made in 1895 as a 41 Colt, it’s been converted to 44 special. All my research indicates that it should recover antique status. I was talking with a verifier this morning and he was concerned it may not.

I’ve looked up the FRT on armalytics and the FRN states it is an antique. But the smith says the FRT and FRN are different…..

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Current position of the RCMP lab is that a gun must not have been manufactured in a no go caliber. Get a colt letter if you haven't. Then submit.

Had a brain fart, 41 colt is not no go.

It's the same as Webley made in 455 and converted to 45acp - antique.
 
You can easily find ths info on the RCMP site.

.44 Special is not an "antique cartridge" in itself, but a pre-1898 handgun chambered in .44 Special (or converted to it) is generally recognized as an antique firearm because .44 Special is 'not on the list of prohibited calibers'.

Note .44 Special round was invented about 1907 or so ...

Write to RCMP and apply for and pay for and get a specific letter on your actual revolver by serial # and specs etc. Takes several months but you might as well get one.

I thought you had to send the gun in for inspection to get a letter? Please tell me I'm wrong and I'll get in touch with them.

They will ask you for pictures, they will tell you how to take them. An inspection is for converted auto and even those it's not always. Your most important document is going to be the colt archives letter about when and how the gun was manufactured.

Btw, the RCMP antique letters are free, not sure what Hunter means by 'pay'... Or are you paying the verifier to submit it?
 
Don’t hold your breath I have had a gun waiting for papers from RCMP idiots for 4 years. Your gun is antique you have no worries.
 
Thanks for the responses guys. I agree it is antique, this local gunsmith keeps going back to the old adage of “44 special is readily available”….

I brought him a print out of the FRT from armalytics, showed him the rcmp website, brought a colt letter stating it was 41 colt originally, showed him the NFA website stating antique laws.

I’m certain of what I have and know I am following the law. I am hoping someone on here has a letter with a colt in 44 special just to show him. I believe he is going to verify it as an antique, which still doesn’t mean anything to the average rcmp officer, I know the letter from them is not a requirement bought I had the gun there anyways so I figured I would just get it verified and if I choose to send in the info at a later date I can.

Does anyone have a copy?

What is the actual difference between the FRT and FRN?

I do have 3 of them in 44 special and I know I have the letters - where I put them is another question
 
It goes by what the original cartridge was, being 41 Colt. The 44 special conversion is irrelevant, since it isn't a proscribed cartridge.

not sure who your verifier is but i would find a different one one that actually knows his business
i just went thru the same nonsense with two private idiots not sure how they become verifiers they barely are able to tie there shoe laces
finely did it myself thru local provincial cfo took less than 3 weeks
and even with them i had to fill in all the blanks

I will see if I can find where I put them - I put them away somewhere where I would be able to find them, that never works out well for me
 
I'm not a big single action guy but searching the actual FRT for an antique as "SAA", "Single Action Army" or "1873" didn't prove fruitful.
There are 36 antique Colt models listed in the FRT consisting of the following (a couple obvious ones like derringers removed):

1847
1848
1849
1851
1855
1860
1861
1862
1871
New Line 30
New Line 40

Correct.

The test to become a verifier is very simple, but they limit who can become one by requiring a sponsorship from a business or police. I did it and did not have to study (shrug).

The 'verification' will trigger a review and if approved a reclassification and issuing of the antique letter.

I can tell you that there is at least one entry for a Webley in .45 ACP that is listed as antique...
