Has anyone chronographed the speed of golf balls fired from their cannons. I plan on it but I need to get one first. I've used up to 700 grains of BP in a 24" barrel. The balls I use weigh about 700 grains. I shot it at my old house and the balls go through the outside wall and at least 2 inside walls of plaster and lathe. I found a couple of balls and they are hardly marked up at all. Any hints or tips or stories about your golf ball cannons would interest me. Thanks.
 
I researched this before I built it, I hope it's not illegal, you can buy them from in the US and they ship them to you by mail. If I'm wrong please let me know. I read every thread in here about cannons and I think more than just I have a golf ball cannon. Plus I live in the middle of nowhere.
 
Don't worry as long as it is ignited by a fuse it is just a giant match lock and is not registerable I have a half sized napoleon cannon we shot a old car at the farm with it. lot of fun.
 
I think that golf balls are too light to have tremendous range. As I recall, I shot a few on the range and they went less than 200 yards. At close range they have tremendous power but they slow down quickly relative to a metal slug or to a soup tin of concrete.

They most certainly are - but if they are touch hole fired they are classed as antiques, and exempt from registration and licencing.

A CGN member has a registered 76mm gun from a Sherman. It is classed as a firearm and registered as such.

I wonder what the chances of a rebounding golf ball would be. Would be pretty scary to have one come back.
 
I built a touch-hole mortar a while back, out of 2 3/4 ID pipe, with solid end cap welded on. A pop or beer can full of concrete goes a long way up with only a 35mm film canister of black powder! Lots of fun!
I also did the same with a longer piece of the same pipe, sort of civil war cannon style (except that I did not have proper wagon wheels, so it was simply a tube and a wooden trail mount). It would shoot pop cans across a valley!
If I can transfer 8mm non-digital tape to digital format somehow, I'll try and upload some video.

Wow, I was going to build a golf ball cannon until I read this !!!!!!!!!:D:D
 
A pop can is 2 5/8" dia. so it fits nicely down a 2 3/4" ID pipe. It will have 1/8" clearance, so use a balled up newspaper for wadding.
WATCH FOR SMOULDERING EMBERS, BOTH IN THE TUBE, AND IN THE GRASS IN FRONT.
 
Dig around online, and see if you can find the site of a guy that's cutting off old oxygen cylinders and using them to shoot bowling balls.

He says that the noise they make going through the air, wierds out the moose that live in behind the range he shoots at!

Read a post online, by a guy that lived down in a valley, below some very nice ($$$) houses. Seems one of the "upper" residents was fond of swatting golf balls off his lawn, over the area below.The writers house was at the outer limits of the range of the balls from on high, and there was no way he could hit one uphill that far. He said he grew tired of the dents caused by the golf balls, in his lawn, and in his "stuff", so he "returned" a few of them, with a compressed air cannon. Said it made a very impressive noise when it hit the picture window of the house above, and the rain of golf balls ceased forthwith.

I'd hate to see the size of the cable lock for that thing :p
