Muzzle Devices for 5.56mm/.223 indoor shooting.

Hey all - the Taipan X I bought recently just has a very simple, clean barrel protector cap. There's nothing wrong with it, but I prefer the aesthetic of a muzzle device of some sort. The Taipan X barrel is 1/2x28 threaded, so compatible with your standard AR15 muzzle devices.

Any other time I might go with a simple A2 birdcage, but I figure if I'm spending the money anyway I should look into compensators and hybrid brake-compensators. The barrel is 16.5" so it's far enough away from my face that a linear compensator isn't needed.

The Taipan is also pump action/straight pull, so muzzle rise from repeated shooting isn't really a major issue. I'm looking for something that helps to make the rifle pleasant to shoot and the end of the barrel look good. I also primarily shoot indoors and don't want to be rattling the teeth of my lane neighbours - I don't want to be that guy with a loud-ass muzzle brake that makes everyone around them mutter. Other criteria is that I prefer the price to be between $75-150 CAD pre-tax.

So, I'm considering the following candidates. Happy to hear other suggestions, though!

  • Precision Weapon Systems FSC 556 Compensator
  • SureFire WARCOM Sport 556 (this is not the suppressor-compatible one) Flash Hider
  • Maple Ridge Armoury Rock-Solid Muzzle Brake 5.56mm
  • Maple Ridge Armoury Defiant Muzzle Brake 5.56mm
  • Spectre Hex Brake 5.56mm
  • VG6 Precision, Gamma Muzzle Brake
I love the look of the Precision Armaments EFAB hybrid muzzle, but at $229 it's a little out of my preferred price range. That said, if people vouch for it, I might stretch the extra distance.

I prefer to buy Canadian when I can, so if it's a tie between a Canadian-made device and a non-Canadian, I'll take the Canadian.

If anyone has any experience shooting with these muzzle devices, or even better, being in the stall next to someone shooting with one of these devices, please chime in! While I want something that helps the performance and accuracy of the rifle, courtesy to my lane-mates in my club trumps any performance improvements. If any of these are too loud and obnoxious to be in the lane next door, I don't want those choices.

I have zero issues with 5.56 recoil - been shooting it for years on my semi-autos. The tied-for-top criteria with this is "not-obnoxious".

The A2 birdcage is the obvious and cheapest choice, frankly; I had one on my Crusader Sentinel. But if I can find something that looks nice, helps with rise just a bit, and doesn't bother my lane-mates, that's what I want.

For indoor shooting either the a2 you already have or a linear compensator or a blast diverter would work. A linear comp and blast diverter will push the muzzle blast forward down range instead of left and right to your range neighbours. S&J makes some in different lengths

I'd just run an A2 (or one of the Surefire flash hiders or Warcomps if you want to be fancy). Any brake will be more obnoxious than a bare muzzle or flash hider, especially inside and considering how you'll be upsetting your sights every time you cycle the action (presuming this is more for standing unsupported shooting than deliberate prone shooting) a brake won't really all that useful, imo.

Haven’t used indoors, but I like SureFire too. Keeps options open for if you want to get the blast deflector, and I see they now make a HUB attachment too (doubt we’ll ever be allowed to own suppressors though, even though they’re allowed in the EU & commonwealth countries often mentioned by anti-firearm ppl, but I digress…)

I’ve not tried the “sport” versions though, also if you don’t use the closed tine variety, it might give you the “tuning fork” ringing

ANYTHING that diverts gas to the side will be obnoxious indoors.
 
I still use my Griffin Armament quick detach, no tools required, blast shield. Back in the days of 3 gun, I would toss it on for any stage were we had to shoot prone, modified prone. So nice not to have a blast of dirt and sand in the face. Directs all the gas forward. If you have the range to yourself, leave it off. When someone shows up, put it on.

Thanks for all the advice. I have dropped all the purely muzzle brake options.

I think A2/variants are great options, as are the three/four tine flash suppressors.

I was very close to buying the SureFire WARCOMP Sport and then I took a hard left into more expensive territory to try out the Precision Armaments EFAB Hybrid Muzzle Brake. If it turns out to be too obnoxious, I'll keep it for outdoor use and go back to a 3-tine flash suppressor. I will confess part of the decision was the look of the EFAB, but I also wanted something that I could potentially use for 3-gun later if, as we all hope, centrefire semis become non-restricted again.
