First time at the range with my Ruger SR22 rifle

Today was my first (serious) time at the range with my Ruger SR22 rifle. I have to say, it was a lot of fun! I used CCI Blazer ammo, and on 200 rounds, I only had 1 fail to fire, and 3-4 failures to eject.

It was windy as hell so groupings were not the best, but managed 1.5in at 50 yards and around 3 inches at 100 meters. Nothing to get excited about, but for a first time shooting, I'm happy with myself.

100 meters is a hell of a lot further in person than on youtube :LOL:

Good for you. Always good to see someone new get into the sport.

The bug only gets worse from here.

Better than what I can do! I love mine through and through though. Using BX25 style mags the FTF/FTE are a little more common as the mags have a little wiggle to them. An easy fix was to take up the space with some electrical tape on the backside of the mag.

Standard 10 rds style mags work flawless.

How are your BX-25 mags? Mine somehow got pinned in a way that I can only put 9 rounds in it lmao. Isn;t it supposed to be 10?

I'm using the standard rotary mags. I have one that I know is Ruger branded and it works flawlessly. I have 4 others that are stacked in 2x2 and are clear/red plastic, and those are the ones I have FTEs with. I'll probably strip and clean them at some point, see if that helps.

That is a great start! Sounds like my first trip to the range with my CZ.

I now expect 10 shot groups at 1 1/2" at 100, and hope for one or two per range trip <1". Some days, I get one or two!

This year I hope to get shooting at my friends range where we can go to 150 and 200. Long range .22 is very thereputic as long as you don't let some of the bad shots and targets get into your head.

The way it is feeding, you have a winner!

Best advice I can give you is to shoot the hell out of it. You will find things that may not be helping your accuracy, and those you can upgrade.

Don't go out right away and buy a "match" barrel. shoot the one that you have and figure out if that is where you need to go. My Barrel was a brand new takeoff CZ457 CZUB Varmint barrel. I replaced the original "Super Match" that the old 455 came with. The barrel was indeed brand new; I cleaned it and got zero anyting out of it. The original owner never shot it. If he had, he would have kept it; man does it shoot.

Have fun and put a couple thousand rounds through it, by then you will know where you are going!

I was just telling my wife yesterday how relaxing target shooting is. I guess it's a combination of being outdoors, controlling your breathing and concentrating.

Once you get to the point of shooting your rifle almost instinctivily, that is when it will start to teach you about yourself. I cut my teeth with .22s with iron sights, upgraded to a .22-250 built on a Mauser K98 for me by Jim Butcher in Clinton; McGowan Premium barrel, Fajen stock, double set triggers, and a Tasco 6-24 Target Scope, for ground hogs about 45 years ago. I hand loaded, so shot it lots; accuracy was a given. Effortless to hit the target, even out to 400 yards, the odds were in my favor, not the ground-hog's LOL. No zero stop dials, hold over and hold for wind. Today, equipment makes it easier to shoot well, but it is still difficult to shoot better. This is where I am at with the .22, no problem hitting the paper targets, but always a challenge to make the groups smaller. Today, on the rare ocassion that a buddy has an issue with Ground Hogs, I use a 6.5 x 55 with a decent scope, but just a sporting rifle. My time at the bench with the CZ keeps me tuned in for the 6.5. I'm old, so maybe not 400 yards, but 300 is not an issue. Simpler scope 4-16 instead of 6-24 power, no exposed turrets, so hold for distance and windage.

What we do at the bench with our little .22s gives us skills applicable to all our sports. Sun is shining here today, no wind, still -1; I am getting "itchy", lol.
