Athlon Heras 15 - 60 for .22LR bench shooting

What is the good, the bad, and anything else relevant about the Athlon Heras 15-60X56 scope for .22LR bench shooting?

It's a scope I haven't used but seems to have some desirable characteristics, such as high magnification, second focal plane, parallax adjustment below 25 yards.

It's a big scope with a reticle quite unlike the regular fine crosshairs or target dot crosshairs with which I'm more familiar.

At about $1000, not an insignificant price, but it's less than half the price of a Sightron SIII 10-50X56 and nearly $800 less than a Sightron 45X.
Is it a good value?

 
I think it is a sweet scope, and would love to try one. Keep in mind that when reviews and literature say a scope is bright and clear, that can be relative. It is a known fact that the higher the magnification the less light is gathered the dimmer a scope becomes, all other things being constant.

24 powere is perfect for me at 100 yards, but if you are planning on pushing out to 3 or 400 yards, there could ve value in it.

I love the uncluttered retical, very similar to my Riton Scope.

but not overly cluttered like a xmas tree. The 1/2moa hash marks? turrets are 1/8moa/click so that good.
Being SFP the center + may be alright, on my other Athlons I've come to like the floating dot but they are FFP
But there aren't a lot of high power options out there , it should be a good one.

also you mention setting for 25yds, is that realistic at the min. setting of 15X

If it's any help, I've currently got an Argos BTR gen 3 10-40 situated on my 457. I'm quite happy with the performance of the glass vs the price point of the scope. Things are nicely clear and bright up to around 35x. The last 5x of magnification is where I start to notice a change. As expected with the higher magnification, the image dims and the focus needs a slight tweak. I've played around with setting the parallax at max magnification and lowest. The last 5x wants its own fine adjustment.

Not for running game, but for targets, should be just fine!
 
I was wondering about this myself. I have the Heras 4-20 and am quite happy with it. 60x is a lot of power curious how much of that magnification is actually usable.
 
I have an Argos G1 8-34x56 FFP and I like the 'clutter' for counting holds for wind or just vert for different ammo or distances. I have one on my CZ-VMTR and one (that didn't go with the CZ-455 Last year) now on my B-22 FV. The B-22 isn't 'quite as accurate' but the glass helps :rolleyes:

For the type of shooting i do, a zero-stop for elevation and a center-zero for windage, make the 'clutter' redundant.
 
Thanks for the comments and observations. I will try out this scope.

While the maximum magnification it boasts (60X) will not be as clear as it would be at the lower end, it shouldn't be a problem because I don't use more than about 45X at 100 yards.
 
Specs and function are fantastic and punch way above its price point. sold some to local F class shooters and feedback was very positive.

For me, the biggest issue is how fine the reticle is... FOR MY EYES. Others have had little problem.

Unless changed, the parallax adjustment favors shorter distance making it ideal for rimfire and air rifle distances.

Just a followup, my 8-34x56 FFP has 1-MOA hash and 1/4MOA cliks and is very clear at 34x mag, out to the 175 I shoot 22lr CZ-457 VMTR at. This scope is 'disc'td' in MOA but still avail in MIL. The down side is that the TOTAL MOA either Horiz or vert is 45 MOA, so I go a 30MOA rail and Burris Sig XTR rings to adjust up or down more. A 20moa is fine from 50 out to 175Y, but I need to reduce mag to get a target within 'hold-over' sight at the bottom of hashes. Changing the XTR rings or a lower rail would be a solution to this. And Under the 175 the scope is fine for my use.

It is a common misconception in optics gathering light!! This is a physical impossibility. Brightness and clarity are controlled with coatings,lens quality and manufacturing process. Light transmission in the 90% or above are only obtainable with the highest grade of all elements available. Big objectives and main tubes allow more travel. A quality one inch tube with 32mm objective can have a much clearer,brighter view than a scope with 56mm objective and 36mm tube.
 
I have couple athlon scopes that are great for what I use them for. Comparing them to my sightrons or my nightforce is not a fair comparison . Athlon scopes have limitations that are not deal breakers for punching holes in paper with .22lr at any range , I think they are a great value at their
price point
