First time at the range with my Ruger SR22 rifle

When bore sighting down the bore, farther is better, so I do it at 50m with a rimfire, and the first shot is always within a few inches at 50m. Then I fine tune at 50m, then add 7 minutes of elevation, and move to 100m . The 7 minutes puts me very close at 100m, with my target loads.
Well rimfires I start at 20 or 25. Because I make a data chart for other ranges out to 100. I do postal matches targets at 25, 50 and 100. Some of my guns I do Silhouette style shooting at set ranges. Some are zeroed at 25 because majority of the targets are. But have to know to shoot higher or lower at other distance.

Not all guns can be bore sighted down the bore, lasers can be iffy. But many are afraid to start shooting closer. Not everybody starts out have spotting scopes. But shooting closer and walking back is the easiest method I found. Then you can get valuable info as you go.

Agreed, at 20, fire one shot, dial the scope or the sights over to the hole in the paper confirming your math, verify with second shot. Good to go.
 
We don't even have 20m targets at our range, they start at 25m.
Work with what you have. 25 works the same way. MOA scope, 4 clicks per inch at 100 yards; 16 clicks per inch at 25, 20 clicks per inch at 20 yards. Simple math.

Interestingly, if you zero close, it will leave you a bit more dial up elevation for distance. Note the chart below zeroed at 50, the trajectory shows the bullet traveling up before it starts to travel down. The difference between this chart and my rifle sighted in at 20 is as follows:

Based on this chart with a 50 yard sight in, dial-up at 100 would be about 8" (8MOA).
Having sighted mine in at 20 yards, my dial-up at 100 is only 6". It gives you two more MOA dial up, if you have a scope with a zero stop.

No matter where you zero, your maximum adjustment range remains the same.. I don't use a zero stop system, I actually removed the pin, so I can dial as far as the scope adjustment allows.

stubblejumper is correct.

It doesn't matter what the initial zero distance is, whether the scope is zeroed at 25, 50, or 100, it doesn't change the adjustment range on the scope.
