Well rimfires I start at 20 or 25. Because I make a data chart for other ranges out to 100. I do postal matches targets at 25, 50 and 100. Some of my guns I do Silhouette style shooting at set ranges. Some are zeroed at 25 because majority of the targets are. But have to know to shoot higher or lower at other distance. When bore sighting down the bore, farther is better, so I do it at 50m with a rimfire, and the first shot is always within a few inches at 50m. Then I fine tune at 50m, then add 7 minutes of elevation, and move to 100m . The 7 minutes puts me very close at 100m, with my target loads.
Not all guns can be bore sighted down the bore, lasers can be iffy. But many are afraid to start shooting closer. Not everybody starts out have spotting scopes. But shooting closer and walking back is the easiest method I found. Then you can get valuable info as you go.
