Hey, folks.

Going out next fall with the intention of getting in and out of spots without making a lot of noise. The bike seems the best tool for the job.

Anyone here done this before? How do you secure the rifle while cycling? Anyone know of a good bike mount for a rifle, or a secure rifle sling that prevents the gun from either thumping you on the back or falling off your shoulder?

Thanks,

Dan

I have just slung my shot gun on my back when grouse hunting. I also made up a leather scabbard and mounted it on the top bar of my bikes frame. The rifle butt sticks out front of the bike but is out of the way for turning.

Gonna grab my gunrunner and try it right now. Wonder if it sits too low, might hit the tire

Edit: so you can ride with it as long as the rear suspension travel isn’t excessive. Problem when you dismount if you try to straddle the frame the muzzle hits the seat

One of the two shoulder slings used by biathletes should do the trick, but you would have to watch out for low hanging branches. How do you plan to get a dead critter out on a bike?

Cross-body with a sling.

Otherwise rhino mounts for an ATV depending on what your handle bar setup is like:

I'd think cross body with a good adjustable sling would work OK. That handlebar setup would be deadly in any kind of treed area. Just hook one low hanging branch and down you go.

I’d have to try but I suspect the gunrunner type packs wouldn’t be all that great, unless you have a short enough barrel it can be rolled up at the bottom. I know mine has to be angled to sit on a skidoo. I believe it would hit the rear tire. Put it on a gun grabber rack on the handlebars or sling it cross body. If you’re not riding through overhead branches or anything it could be strapped to a pack with the barrel extending up above your head.

On cross country skis, I used to sling a pump shotgun or a rifle across my back with a 2 point sling, it just had to be an extra long one. It would work just as well on a bike, and I've seen someone in the States do the same thing on a motorcycle.

Edit: I'm assuming you want the rifle to be at the ready, as much as that is possible.

I've done this. I'm big into cycling and alot of areas are closed to motor vehicles or have annoying restrictions. So i loaded my steal "Bombtrack" touring bike with gear and giant 3.5 inch tires and my gun. Worked real well. You can cover alot of distance. I had a front-rack that i mounted to the bike and then i mounted a set of ATV grips on that to hold my gun.
