Scope recommendation (unsure of magnification)

Hey guys, I'm about to set up my rifle, which will mostly be a range toy with access to 300yds max. From my research, some decisions have made, I believe I want FFP, and mrad. I am new to distance shooting, and haven't found a clear answer on magnification.

Ive read that glass is sometimes more important than magnification, so looking for some insight or recommendations to see what I'm doing at 300yds.

First thing first, what is your budget? You are right when saying glass quality is more important that magnification on lower cost/quality scope meaning that if you buy a scope let’s say 2.5-10x42 at around $1000 and you buy with the same money a scope with a range of 5-25 or greater the chances are that the first one will have better glasses, so clearer image at max magnification. Usually the problem with entry level high magnification scope is at the max magnification the image is less than optimal especially closer to the edges.
So what is your budget?
 
Imho, glass is more critical than magnification.

Are you wanting something lightweight and easy to carry, or is this for a target rifle?

The dnt/arken scopes are okay for the money, but heavy and again, in my experience that last little bit of magnification is a really narrow exit pupil.

A vortex LHT could be a nice option.

If you’re willing to spend a little more and get a SFP the nightforce 2.5-10x42 is an incredible do-all optic.

On the topic of vortex, from everything I have heard, avoid the venom and stick with the proven lines like viper, lht, razor.
 
I’d go for something like a leupold VX3 2.5-10x42 I think it would be plenty, you can find them easily used for around $800-1000 then you get lots of money left for ammo!
So many good scope on the EE that buying new seems silly.
 
For 1-2k you can avoid shartken and the other bum tier optics. 300m with 6.5 is no fun, invest that 2k into a 22lr build and you will enjoy it more
 
Another option could be the primary arms GLx lineup.

Don’t have any personal experience, but I believe they are fairly well reviewed.

Athlon ares BTR is another one that could be considered. Again, can be found on the ee for around $1k.

Meopta has always impressed me with glass and features but i find their reticles stuck in early 2010.

Covid and inflation have really killed the midtier optics options.
$1500-$1800 used to get you some really great glass.

Now it seems if you want the features you’re after, and want to avoid buying a Chinese scope, options really land you in the +$1500 range.
 
I'm using a Riton 6-24 x 50. Cost me less than $400.00 and it is clear, sharp, repeatable dialing up and down; zero stop on elevation, zero set on windage, great reticle that is not overly cluttered, and very fine reticle elements with a very fine (I think 1/8 moa) center dot. Perfect for the range.

You can spend 1-5 thousand dollars, but you don't need to.
