Thoughts on the Tikka T3x CTR?

I’ve owned a tikka CTR 308 for five years and it’s been an amazing rifle. This year I’ve gotten into hand loading and really have this CTR shooting lights out .5” groups at 100meters off the bench. I’ve found for hand loads, Berger 168 classic Hunter set 0.020” off lands 45.5 gr varget, Hornady 178 eldx 0.030” off lands 44.5gr varget and sierra TGK GameChanger 165gr 0.030” off lands 46gr varget. All with fire formed brass from this chamber only neck sizing and trimming brass, Cci 200 primers. This hunting season using my 178gr eldx load 44.5gr varget 0.030” off lands is giving me avg velocity of 2673fps, my kids took a whitetail buck last week 240yds, and I took a cow elk yesterday 215yds. Seriously I’m looking at buying another tikka ctr in 223 rem just for plinking around at the range. I also own a tikka UPR 308 that I bought Boxing Day 2024 on a deal I couldn’t turn down, that rifle straight out of the box off the bench trying some different factory loads, shots 10,11 & 12 with Sako TRG precision 175gr bug holed the paper at 100m, I absolutely couldn’t believe it, so the CTR, upr, tacA1, ace & varmint line of rifles you will not be disappointed! Only downside to the CTR / UPR 308 is the price of the factory mags, as I recently just purchased one from Stoeger Canada website…… ouch
im fine with the price of ctr mags, however they lack any sorty of reliability. the metal is butter soft, the springs made from the same steel aparently. put my ctr in a mdt chassis back in the day... sold my ctr stock and spare mag for the same price of the mdt chassis back then....

There are some good options to replace the original CTR Mag system for something AICS compatible. Atlasworx has had an AICS Mag system that fits into the CTR footprint since years and is not too expensive and works perfect. It comes with a slightly too long (about 1mm) release lever to cater for stocks or magazines that are out of spec somewhat, that gives you the opportunity to get it just perfect. MDT has finally come up with a few very good options for the CTR inlet which cater for 223 up to 30-06 with AICS type mag systems in three lengths. 223-308 AICS Core or Hunting, the Medium size around 3.3" and a 3.560" long action Core. Even offer an adjustable Lever. I have one rifle with original CTR mag System but prefer AICS as on all my other rifles. I use AICS on Sako, Mauser, Remmy and Tikka.

The poly MDT AICS mags work very well in the CTR / UPR bottom metal with minimal modifications, I have (2) 10rd ones that I have used, only problem with those mags are I can't load cartridges as long as I can with the factory CTR mags. I don't really follow what you mean by butter soft metal, the CTR mags have been nothing but reliable for me

I have (2) poly MDT AICS mags that work just fine in my factory CTR bottom metal, I just don't like them as much as the factory mag because it limits the length I can load cartridges to, if using factory / sami length cartridges they work just fine
