Interesting Customer Review of Garmin Xero C1 vs Labradar

I do find the size factor of the Garmin to be quite interesting compared to the briefcase-sized Labradar.

Having one already, I will stick to the Labradar simply for the external power source vs integrated rechargeable battery. My experience is that rechargeables eventually lose durability over time and run time becomes affected. I can always change my battery pack on the Labradar, which I pack along in the carry bag accesory pocket, along with pen and notepad.

If the Garmin can be run while connected to an external battery pack, that may make a very big difference for a lot of people! It fits in the rifle case or range bag, where the Labradar is a beast of its own.

The only way to do a proper test is to use several chronos and the same load with a bullet having a Doppler derived BC on long range paper. What is happening instead, is the equivalent of people going to 4 decimal places with a $25 Canadian Tire plastic measuring device. I used my Garmin on a box of Hornady factory 300PRC yesterday. ES 77, SD 17.7 avg 2888. The strength of the Garmin is ease and simplicity of use. No need to alter the downrange results by hanging something off the barrel, going forward to set up a chrono, or carry another briefcase size unit and buy special add ones to pick up all your various projectiles. Old chronos work if you are by yourself at the range and you don’t accidentally shoot them, and the weather cooperates.

And that's why my second chrony was a Labradar... I figured it was cheaper than a third, and a fourth and... Because lihting conditions force you to shoot lower and closer to the sensors, until you pull one low shot.


Thanks for the "works while plugged" confirmations. It's both for when the battery gets old years later, or for those times you were SURE you had charged it after your range trip last weekend.

I would hazard a guess that neither are correct. You might get lucky on one gun being accurate when you punch your chrono speeds and bc into a calculator like the kestrel, but most guns/loads will need to be trued over a long distance like the kestrel suggests. And looking at the deviation in the two units I think I’d rather see what the vertical spread looks like at a distance like 300m or beyond instead of relying on one of these units.

Would definitely be a huge perk as most BC’s aren’t true with the exception of a few higher end bullet manufactures.

Maybe someone with more know than me could explain how.

Not possible. The original Labradar only tracked to about 75m of distance.
To obtain a proper BC from the projectile's flight with a chronograph, it must track it to the distance you need the BC to be viable at. So roughly 1000 yards, depending on the caliber.
 
It is just an electronic gizmo that'll give you a pretty good idea of a speed zone you are working in, what the rifle is capable of if you want to go there. It'll tell you a little bit about the load you are using, but, the target and distance will tell you more in the long run. Doesn't matter if it's a Garmin or a Labradar or an Athlon or a Caldwell, all the small doeppler units are nicer to use than the old optical ones like an Oehler or like a Magnetospeed, although a Magnetospeed may possibly be more useful on some indoor ranges for some apps. They're just a snapshot and record of the moment at hand, at the time it left your barrel, and the condition, that you shot that shot in. Two hrs or 6 hrs or a day or a week or a different place can or will change all that happens downrange.

I had just purchased the athlon when I heard you could get BC from the labradar and was kind of regretting my purchase but your reply makes me feel better about it.

I’d heard the labradar could be picky if it wasn’t pointed just right and heard multiple stories of it picking up other peoples shots at ranges. I have used a few garmins and athlon and they are so easy and simple, had a magnetospeed but I just couldn’t get over the fact the wand changes POI and hanging it off your barrel completely changes the harmonics. So you basically had to shoot twice as much, each charge required group testing and then had to figure out velocity with enough of a sample baseline to get true ES and SD.
 
Makes me wonder how guys like Elmer Keith and Jack O’Conner ever shot so much game without all this stuff. If you read Elmer ‘s book on big games rifles , he made note of how much difference the elevation made on the point of impact , less dense air at the higher elevation and the rifles shot higher . Things that make you go, hum !
 
New Labradar doesn't track the way the old one did, BC doesn't make any real difference til out to 5-600yds and beyond anyway. It starts changing the second it leaves the barrel, and speed and conditions affect it downrange, along with transition when it gets that far. If you even intend to actually shoot that far.

No reason you couldn’t plug a power bank into the usbc ? Also I have to charge my Garmin maybe 3-4 times a season and that only takes a couple minutes and that’s shooting 10 or so matches a year plus load development etc , the battery is awesome on the Garmin. On season 3 now I think ? Haven’t seen any battery degrading yet .
