Bedding Thoughts.

That's embarrassing. Everytime I've gone to a gunsmith, I've had terrible luck. They charge a pretty penny, and any other profession would be held accountable for terrible work so don't give a gunsmith a pass because you're in the same hobby. Sorry this happened, I hope you can get it fixed by a professional on his/her dime.

The stock was custom made for a R700 Pattern action. the stock personal i really like the look and I got it for a song.
That explains how the depth was incorrect and why the "smith" did what he did. I don't blame the smith as much as I do that poor excuse of a stock.
Start over with a factory made 700 stock...

Updated hopefully more clear

Thanks for the updated pic. Yes, the rear tang is definitely riding high, it looks like the action is high too. Usually you will see the rear tang buried in the stock enough to create a smooth blend between wood and metal.

$1200 to bed a freaking stock?! I do my own work, last stock cost me like $3 for putty and $20 for the JB weld. Can't imagine how pillars and labor gets you to $1200.

Found this gem on their website... Nightmare indeed...

Well I just got the bill. $1250 From R P S Precision for this job. Absolutely insane
Maybe he charges his bedding jobs by the gram of epoxy… just kidding.

Honestly, sorry about your luck. And he has your rifle and will likely hold it hostage until you pay as well. I hope you get that sorted out quickly and don’t miss too many matches.

Ah I see i didn't include a before photo if the action in the stock. I was of the opinion the elevation was fine.

In this pic it looks like the action should be pushed forward a bit to line up with the contour of the wood. It’s hard to say without seeing it in person. He should’ve been able to give you some kind of idea on what to do and if it would work before he started though.

Please post a picture of the finished product both with the metal in and out.

I know it was a few years ago but it was common to pillar bed a 700 for $250 - $300.

Did they not quote you a price before doing it?
