Rust resisting a hunting rifle - CZ 557

Greetings all,

I have the almost perfect hunting rifle, for me. CZ 557, walnut stock, smooth action, reliable, accurate, comfy, etc... etc...

Only issue is that I noticed after a week of hunting that it was starting to stain through the blueing as if rust was going to start. I oiled it up and it seems fine, but I want to take steps on what to do to prevent this in the future. I really like the rifle and I am OK putting some money/effort into it on cerakote or rebluing or whatever. Though I have not had issues, I am also interested in how I can treat the stock.

Realize that stainless and a plastic stock is the ultimate answer and I may build a mountain rifle in the future, but still want to make this one more resistant to rust.

Any thoughts appreciated!
Try "Renaissance Wax." Smear on a decent coat (it works as a polish on the wood, too) and let it dry a few minutes, buff with a cloth. I've put this stuff on guns stored in a more humid environment where some surface rust was just starting to appear and it put a complete stop to the issue with no need to reapply over literally years. Museums use it for this purpose in fact. Good idea to take your stock and buttplate off as well and rub it into the inside wood and steel as well. Don't succumb to the urge to go plastic, life is too short for that sort of thing.

Try this. It not only works on your car, it works on your gun too.

I would even use it to hose down my bore after shooting corrosive ammo.

As a cartridge lube, a little spritz in a heavy ziplock bag and a shake does it. Excellent case lube. Too muddy to use on a rifle; I have been using Balistol lately and am happy.

Hornady case lube and the stuff they are talking about for guns are two different products. Unless you're using the gun oil for case lube.

If you had read the post I had quoted, it gave my post context; we were talking about Fluid Film. I was talking about using fluid film for case lube. I will use nonthing else for reloading.

Either fluid film every millimeter of metal... and smell like a goat while hunting... or have the rifle ceracoated, and only protect the bolt and bore with fluid film... and smell less like a goat...

Fluid Film also makes a great case lube... now your ammo smells like goat. You're welcome.

One of these days I should really try that lol sorry

For regular maintenance, wipe with gun oil of your choice after each day of use. It'll stay nice.

If you want super low maintenance, cerakote is my favorite option. You can have it cerakoted satin black so it still looks classy.

Looks like barricade ain’t much better than remoulding…
I did a very similar test, but not just outside.

I did it on field rifles/shotguns, both in long term storage, and out in the field on extreme weather hunts, as well as at gunshows, where firearms get fondled multiple times over two day periods, with sweaty palms, some extreme, sticky kids hands, etc.

I settled on Sheath, (Barricade), because it worked best under all conditions.

I watched your video, interesting, but definitely not the same results I got from the same products.

There are some great products out there, but they all have strengths and weaknesses.
