I would like to bring my bino’s on an upcoming trip to Europe and the question is would there be any issues with having them in my carry on or do they have to go down below with the luggage?
I am reluctant to let them out of my sight as they are not inexpensive.
Thanks nuts.

Living in the Age or Paranoia, I know that it's hard to believe that there are still items which are not treated as though they are high explosives filled with nuclear waste, but...binoculars are 100% allowed in carry-on luggage. I'm a birder and always have a binocular with me when I travel. Never any kind of problem.

At the Calgary airport, not an international flight, I had expensive antique optics in my carry on and I didn’t want them in my checked luggage. Well, going through X-ray they pulled me out of the line and said what is that??? I had to take it out, unpack it, show it to him, explain to him what it was, repack it. He refused to hold it or even look through them. Then once he was done the interrogation he said Oh….OK, good to go about 20 minutes later. YMMV.

I used to fly into Papua New Guinea often and there'd usually be a couple of ornithology enthusiasts. You could tell them by the expensive binoculars around their necks.

One lovely, older lady with binos that I talked with said she was going to walk the Kokoda Trail . I asked her what guide outfit did she plan on using and she said none, she was just going to do the trail on her own......

I recommended that she go with a reputable guide outfit.

What year was this? From what I've heard, the Kokoda Trail is popular and busy enough with trekkers that someone shouldn't need a guide of any sort. Although I'm sure that wasn't always the case and of course isn't true for many parts of Papua New Guinea.

I'd go with an operator tour. Especially for a woman.

They love gangrape there.
