Hi All,
Am planning to hunt the 3 species of Ptarmigan (mainly), grouse and waterfowl (the latter 2 are not my priority)from a RV/motorhome along the above 2 highways, around mid-September.

Any tips as to the approriate/rich areas and where the bear encounter risk is lower ? Alternatively, which are the areas to avoid ?

Thx a lot for your advices.

Denis

Hello, Denis:

There are others here on CGN who live in the Dawson City area who will have more current information than mine. A couple of decades ago a biologist friend and I hunted willow ptarmigan successfully on snowshoes in early March along the willow flats just past the North Fork Pass on the Dempster. More recently I've seen sharptail grouse coveys along the road into the former Clinton Creek asbestos mine and Forty Mile village. I don't know the current condition of that road; it may not be RV friendly.

In mid-September you should find ptarmigan in subalpine habitat but in my experience ptarmigan are where you find them. I've not hunted them enough to know what habitat they prefer at that time of the year.

Grizzly bears like the subalpine and lower alpine habitat that time of year too, especially if there is a good berry crop.

Enjoy your trip.

Thx a lot for your time and reply.😎🙏

Used to live in Dawson so I can offer a bit of advice. Both areas hold ptarmigan though I have seen more up the Dempster that time of year. More bears on TOTW. You might find them by the roadside or you might have to hike up a ridge and look for them.

Thx a lot. Any particular section of the Dempster to recommend ?
