Ruger American Rimfire - Questions

Hello folks, I'm looking to pickup a RAR Compact model because I found one at a reasonable price point: $500. I have no interest in CZ rifles, I like Ruger.

I really like this rifle platform because it uses 10/22 mags, and I have plenty of those. I have a spare scope that I would like to mount on the RAR.

Questions:
  • Are there any other stock options? Even 3D printed?
  • Can the barrel be replaced by somebody other than a gunsmith?
  • Is accuracy at range (100yds) comparable or better than the 10/22?
  • Are there any DIY trigger mods to make the pull lighter?
  • What else should I know about this platform?
 
It sure don’t take much to beat a 10-22.
They are accurate.
A bit on the piggy side.

I’d pick this over any Norrickoes.

I’m not sure whether Yo-Yo Dave has a kit for or nawt.

Rimfire Central I’m sure will have info on trigger enlightmint.
 
I have a RA .22LR Compact that I absolutely love to shoot. It is stock and I installed a Hawke Rimfire IR scope, the one that has redical markings out to 250 yards. I can't image what other brand gun is as accurate especially at the affordable price point.
 
I would assume all the major stock makers make something for the Ruger American Rimfire.
Ruger has quite a few different models with different stocks in their lineup as well.

I've been considering one for a while and almost picked up a 16" with the FDE plastic stock as a clone to the Ranch model I have.
They seem to have a pretty good reputation for accuracy some better some worse, if you get a shooter you might not need to consider a different barrel.
 
I have one and over all I am overly impressed. It its base it is a good gun. The rear stock is the over whelming issue.
It is plastic and will flex if you use a sling to aid in marksmanship.

Have had poor ejection from day 1 and have been waiting on replacement parts to correct the issue for almost 6 months.

If you are only shooting from the bentch without a sling it will be fine.

Once I have the parts and it is working correctly it will be posted to the EE.
 
I had 2. The blued version was only good for a tomato stake, the stainless was worth the money. The bolt took awhile to work in it sounded like a zipper

MDT made one in the past and I thought Magpul did as well but it looks like I was mistaken and the only current option other then Boyds is the newer MDT ACC Premier GEN2, which is pretty pricey at around $1500.00!

Thank you all for the responses! I think I will buy this rifle. I am glad to hear there are mostly good experiences. I intend to be shooting from the bench with this one, and would like to mount a bipod.
 
357Max os right about RFC having many 'tune-up tips'. I have a Ruger American Standard .223 w-rotary-mag. I did the spring removal, polished everything inside and use PTFE grease on friction points. I got the T-pull down below 2# and really smooth, using 1500g wet/dry paper for the final polishing. Also, I used 600g on the bolt surface - NO MORE ZIPPER ! !

I use a caldwell made sling stud to picatinny rail on my Ruger American Ranch .223, works well though I find the aux sling stud that flops around a bit of a bad design element but otherwise it works well.

You could also just buy a short section of rail and bolt it on to the stock your self, the Caldwell does have some adjustment in it so you can get the rail sitting close to parallel to the barrel depending on the angle of the forend.

I like a pic rail and a bipod with a pic rail attachment but you can also buy a bipod that can attach directly to their sling stud.

The sling stud bipods are certainly a good idea, but I also quite like pic rails and have a spare bipod for that.

Once I get the rifle in hand, I ordered it the other day, I'll see what can be done about mounting a section of rail underneath. I will just buy a section of metal rail as opposed to 3D printing it, as the former will be sturdier.

For attachment of the pic rail to the stock, I might use threaded brass inserts.

There are lot's of good options for M lok rails on amazon that you could easily mount, I've used s e x bolts in the past to mount to plastic forends, you just need to size it to the rail's hole and then figure out how deep the female portion needs to be to go through the stock without exiting and then carve out a recess for the flange to seat into.
