My copy has a copyright date of 1961, I've read it many times.I have 2 copies of O Conner's original Big Game Animals of North America.
One he signed and gave to my Dad (another Jack) whom he well knew.
The other from the sports writer Ian Forbes.
Both are Treasures!
The Big Game Animals of North America (and his related classic, The Art of Hunting Big Game in North America) by legendary outdoor writer Jack O'Connor is a cornerstone of hunting literature. Published in the mid-1970s, the book combines O'Connor's engaging hunting narratives with the scientific natural histories curated by George G. Goodwin.
Core Features of the Book
Species Covered: It acts as a comprehensive field guide to 20 North American big game species, spanning from the harsh Arctic habitats of Canada down into Mexico
Dual Perspective: The book is famously split between O'Connor's personal hunting stories, firearm recommendations, and hunting techniques, alongside natural history background provided by Goodwin.
Artwork: The editions include a stunning collection of full-color paintings and detailed black-and-white drawings by wildlife illustrators.

An honourable mention, George Rushby's "No More The Tusker" deserves to be a lot better known than it is. An ex poacher/ivory hunter turned game ranger, the book is very well written with typical British understatement.
Same here I have all his books…. I mean hunted all my life in BC I can relate to a lot of the areas he’s talking about way back in the 50s and 60s.View attachment 1149640

Note the sportered Ross 303. In the books he says his three hunting rifles are a Boer 7mm Mauser, a Ross 303, and a 7x61 S&H.

I just read a few pages of the sample on Amazon. This book looks great. I might need to order a few of the suggestions on this list.Mine is the Rediscovered Country by Stewart White. Its a late 19th century account of a self directed safari in southern Africa.
