M1 Garand parts kit

I've been wanting to get a .308 M1 Garand for a while now and i've been eyeing up the parts kits that #####h Armoury have for up sale.

Would it be worth it to get one built by a gunsmith or should i just try and buy a complete rifle? Im aware that i would still need a receiver as the parts kit don't come with one but I am patient.

The new wood stock that the kit comes with is a bonus for me

1400 usd is 1950 cad plus shipping and taxes. Plus the receiver. You can buy an Italian tipo2 for 2800. Price probably works out to the same. Parts gun would be better condition but the tipo2 might be more collectable in the future, bing original and parts matching.

Those bm59 kits are interesting
 
The problem with parts kits and take off parts is nothing is guaranteed to be in-spec. That lifter arm pin assembly came off for a reason. I watched a guy struggle with feeding the first few rounds off the enbloc while I thought through the options. I suggested his main spring was weak. But, now he has to go find another mainspring and hope it has the right force to overcome the resistance. I had a Garand built up a while back, and the gunsmith installed a new gas piston tip. It was undersized. I'd never have known, but accepted his advice.

There are shortened Italian 7.62 parts that will trip you up if you don't know the differences. IMHO, buy a built rifle and change the barrel. At least you will have confidence in your start line.
 
The kits come with a brand new barrel and new wood. Combine that with it being a little cheaper than a surplus rifle and I think it's worth it if you don't care about collectors value and want a rifle you can really get some use out of.

the cheaper tipo 2's i can find online seem to all have springfield receivers. they all have the scoring mark to remove the .30 cal marking from the receiver am i correct? im not too worried about how collectable it would be but that mark is a bit of an eye sore in my opinion.

if i were to go the parts kit route i would be keeping my eye out for a breda receiver or really anything thats been un marked.

Im waiting on some consignments to sell before i really get this train rolling but could you recommend anyone in particular in the Lower Mainland of BC?

Honestly, buy a Tipo2. They are not put together rifles by God knows who with unknown Garand experience, they were built by real armourers. They run flawlessly, and shoot very well. Mine is my favourite rifle to shoot hands down. A Garand in 7.62x51 is a beautiful thing.

You could try member Zdragunov here on cgn, I've had a few that he put together, did a nice job. He's on the island though if I recall.
