Shotgun Ammo

When I was 15 or 16 I can remember I bought Imperial 12 gauge shells on sale at Canadian Tire for $3.35 a box of 25. They went bang and the bunnies and birds sometimes died depending on how lucky I got. That was 60 years ago. Shot my first turkey with an Imperial 2/34 #6 of the same vintage about 15 years ago.

I can remember those old 2 3/4 inch blue Imperial shells going on sale in the fall,for$3.33 a box.Sellier Bellot were $1.99 a box.

Ah the good old days.Gasoline was 58 a cents a Canadian gallon.

I can still smell them like I did 60 years ago. Especially on a cold Saskatchewan fall morning while duck or goose hunting.
 
There was nothing wrong with the red and black Sellier and Bellot shells either. We used to call them bobos. Just rolled off the tongue better.

I use 4's and 5's in my 20 gauge on pheasant. With the lower pellet count and the harder hitting of larger pellets, I can drop a bird cleanly with less damage to the meat and fewer injured birds.

Novice hunters think that the more pellets are in the air, the better their chances of getting a hit. This is why they think 12 ga is better and Magnums better yet. If they can't shoot, they're probably right. But, a decent shot with larger pellets is more effective overall.
 
Maybe no one else thinks this but shooting ruffed grouse with soaking wet feathers seems to make them harder to kill. Maybe im nuts or don't shoot well in the rain.

No wild pheasants left in south west ontario. We only have pen raised farm birds. 7/8oz of copper plated 6s work just fine for them. Shots are close no need for 1.25oz loads. I grew up hunting over hounds for rabbits so we never used bigger than 7.5 shot for land dwelling small game

Don't know about you... But on rainy days, I tend to miss a whole lot of time.

My reasoning is they don't seem to flush until you pretty much step on them...

And while holding off from taking the shot (don't want to blow them to pieces)... I seem to lose my ability to judge distance/direction/speed... I more often than not simply miss them :unsure:

As far as ammo/price goes, for the longest time, it seemed like birdshot was +/- $5 box (promotional, a little less, AA a little more). Only time shooting Imperial was for ducks...
