Southern Vancouver Island Bush

Does anybody on Southern Vancouver Island know any decent spots to access the Bush? Years ago I would go out behind Shawnigan lake but the last few times I tried the gates were locked. I know some of the area I would go is now in the watershed. Can you still apply to get keys?

There's special openings during hunting season for people to access the private lands and weekend openings for hiking access. The gates open list is updated every Thursday on Mosaic's access page. You can't apply for keys, no. Most of the country north of Campbell River is crown land so wide open. Also the area each side of the Mt Washington road is accessible as is the country off the Duncan Bay main which heads north towards Campbell River from Courtenay.
 
Thanks, I looked at Mosaic quickly. I’m guessing it’s Timberwest rebranded. Seems like such a waste to limit peoples access. It definitely was the the good old days when I could literally be out in the bush 10 minutes from pulling out of my driveway.
 
Mosaic Forest Management isn't exactly a brand-new logging company; it's the umbrella management conglomerate formed in 2018 to manage the combined private timberlands of TimberWest and Island Timberlands.

Their largest percentage owner is the BC government's own pension fund.
While they pay lip service to promoting access, their actions are diametrically opposed to just that.

Mosaic = NDP "government".
NOT whatsoever concerned with lowly citizen's concerns.
 
There is a lot of area still open on both sides of Cow Lake, as well at the far end. Saw a really nice deer come out of the area last year.

I will never , ever live on Vancouver Island . Both my mother and younger brother live in Naniamo, and while I may visit them every few years, not a snoballs chance in hell will I ever m9ve there for any reason.

I heard they were owned by Brookfield - I guess they sold it off

Everyone I know goes around Renfrew to Cowichan area. One could walk some of the power lines on the Malahat, there is even a shotgun only zone there
