I'm looking at my first upgrade for my norc 1911-9mm, i want to put a muzzle break on. do they really help on recoil or more for the "wow" factor when shooting at night ?

Well, I've never tried a pistol with a muzzle brake, but I'd imagine it would reduce barrel rise after firing, allowing easer and faster target acquisition, or re-acquisition.

I guess every millisecond counts, but I think they're more common on the .45s?
 
Generally compensators need a lot of pressure and gas to create any real advantage. That's why the 38 Super was so popular in competition, large capacity case using high pressures and loads designed to get the most out of the comp. With 9mm the muzzle flip is relatively tame to start with so I'm not sure you'll get much of an advantage from a comp. Normally you'd be looking for a light bullet load with high velocity to get the best from the comp.

The more gas pressure the better, it depends on what your doing with the gun and the design of the compensator.

You would probably be better off asking the question in either the gunsmithing section or action shooting forums. Any how thats my 2 cents worth.

A lot better mods to do on a 1911 before you put one of those on one in 9mm.... ;)
