Yes, you can empty a blind magazine without fully chambering or cycling rounds through the bolt. By tipping the rifle slightly upward and pushing the bolt forward just enough to release a cartridge from the magazine lips, the round will pop out of the well. You can also just keep the bolt handle up, and cycle the rounds through the chamber, extractor will grab the case and eject it, impossible for the firing pin to drop with the bolt handle up.

There is absolutely no need to have the cartridge fully enter the chamber. It’s completely unnecessary.
 
Many of you do not realize there are some very stupid gun owners that can not safely handle a firearm, period... and yet you expect them to be able to use the locking bolt safety Remington recalled.

One can definitely not fix stupid in both the gun world, and the world in general......:(

Those accidents involving Remington rifles are very tragic, both with the injuries and death......:(

There are Liberal gun owners on this site, which confirms the real stupidity of people.........:oops::(

If a firearm owner cannot figure out the ole' Remington Bolt Lock Safety, and with doing so safely, I would say they should not be handling firearms as they could be retarded..........:unsure:

That has happened to me once or twice. After getting back to to truck and taking the rifle off your shoulder you find the bolt open and cartridge gone (another 4 or 5 bucks down the drain) and wonder how long you were wandering around like that. Must have opened up accidently when crowding through the heavy stuff or maybe when shifting your rifle to your left shoulder.

I prefer a locking bolt on a hunting rifle. For a range toy it's not necessary
 
I looked into this while I was waiting for my first 700. Picked it up today. This one opens with the safety on or off so I guess the recall has been done. Serial puts it at '85 or '84.

edit reading more on this. Looks like they changed it a couple years before mine.

I find it disturbing that someone would lack the presence of mind to notice that something in the environment has opened their bolt.

While I've done some serious bull moosing through alder and willow choked landscapes in my professional life when I am not required to walk a straight transect and I am attempting to be quiet and find game I take the path of least resistance.
