I really wanted a 6x45 back in the mid nineties, when it was somewhat popular. I somehow circled back to that, and thought it would be a fun project. I have a Tikka that I will likely be using as a donor action, but might consider something else. Dies I can find, but if I can’t find a prefit barrel I’ll have to look for a reamer.

If anyone here has gone down this route and has some advice I’d love to hear from you.

SteveB on here has a KS barrel on its way to him right now to build a 6x45 . He has his own new reamer . 👍

No advice other than I've been enjoying shooting that 6x47 of mine lately.
Not big boomers at all and seem to have a good big of wack for critters.

I think at this stage I would poke a hole in a doe deer at 300meters !
Ideally I see it as a walk about cartridge for 200m and In , stalking along bush edges etc.
I settled on the 85gr BTSP now- @2800.

Think the x45 is only 100fps behind it with heavies.
 
I have long been keen on this cartridge. In large part it stems from it's relative popularity in South Africa. While growing up there as a gun nut, Gregor Woods, then rifle and hunting editor of Magnum magazine, did much to popularize it in the 1990's as a solid option for someone wanting an effective hunting cartridge in mini action rifles.

It became popular enough that factory ammo was offered, IIRC, by New Generation Ammo and PMP for a while.

By far it's biggest advantage is abundant and cheap brass, and the ease of 'one stroke' case forming. That said, in an era of faster twisted .223 barrels and many more 70gr+ .224" bullets, its marginal advantage on big game over the .223 Rem has shrunk considerably. Further, if one wanted even better 6mm performance from a mini action rifle (but not the cheap brass), the 6ARC would be your huckleberry, and people are also putting 6BR and 6 Dasher into Howa Mini's too.

Still, its cool cartridge and its performance reputation is good.

I’m currently waiting for a .300 Blackout barrel from JC. I restrict myself to one offbeat project a year, so the 6x45 will wait till next year. That’ll give time to find a donor rifle. That said, I just bought a set of dies, so now I’m committed.
