i have heard about the testing and evaluation a person has to do in order to get a Wilderness ATC in Alberta and how they will not issue one if you are not proficient with your pistol or not carrying a pistol they deem to be appropriate.
I've always wondered if you fail to get your ATC.... are you suppose to use a finger gun to get the bear off you?
my thoughts have always been if the bear is coming in hot from a distance i'm using my rifle.
if the bear is on top of me gnawing on my scull i'm gonna use a pistol and bury it into him and unload.
why do i need to show my proficiency in burying a pistol into something and pulling the trigger as many times as i can before i pass out?
isn't having something better than nothing?
I heard of another Paramedic who last fall was out hunting and had his rifle on him when he was mauled and had to be air lifted to hospital.
from what i understand he was unable to get his rifle up before the bear was on him.
his hunting buddy had to shoot it.
if he didn't have a buddy with him he would have died, 100% as it was he got critically injured.
