Hello, I'm interested in pursuing firearms ownership starting with the unrestricted firearms safety course. I'm a citizen by birth but spent most of my life thus far out of the country. I was raised in the southern US so was exposed to firearms from a very yoing age, about seven was when I started with a pellet rifle and was shooting .22 by about ten. All that is to say that while I have never owned any firearms I have had safety habits and standard handling ingrained in me for nearly three decades. Is there anything in the course I would need to look out for or with my prior experience should it be pretty easy?

Just get your RPAL license, cost a little more & is 2 days, it does not harm to get it their are still restricted firearms available if you want & your RPAL can be used for employment purposes.

I wasn't sure about the RPAL. I only with to own a couple of vintage pieces such as a SMLE if I can find one in usable condition without breaking the bank and maybe a Mosin Nagant or a G43 or SVT dependant on availability and price of the platform and ammunition. What does the RPAL cover that the PAL doesn't?

Reasons to get RPAL - for all you know, the current fools may make semi-auto hunting rifles or pump action shotguns to be restricted. Never can tell what they will come up with next. Coming from an old dude, from BEFORE there was any gov't involvement in acquiring a firearm, of about any type. My own upbringing and growing up was about similar to as you describe - except I was in Saskatchewan - was entirely different when my son, daughter and wife got their first guns or hunting licences - a LOT of gov't paper to go through for them - and, of course, Dad became a Hunter Safety, then PAL and RPAL Instructor to get it done in small town nowhere.

I agree with others. Take the course for PAL/RPAL. Well worth the one and done. As mentioned, this government has a record of making, without notice, some non restricted rifles and shotguns to restricted over night. If you get both, you will also have the ability to go to the ranges that rent handguns and give that a try.
