Ammunition Selection at Local CT.

Maybe its the particular franchisee locally but rifle ammunition selection is pretty bizarre at my local Canadian Tire. Kinda think inventory of ammunition may be on a national level.
Noticed four or five brands in each bullet weight in a given cartridge ( common rounds; 303, 308, 30/06, 243, ( not a big seller in NB). 270, 280, 7×57 sparse or none. Nothing larger than 300 win mag. No 32 special, no 45/70, no 38/55, no 35 Remington, no 300 Savage, no 444 Marlin etc.
Many of these oldies are still popular here in NB. Thought perhaps head office is dictating what is carried? Any of you guys elsewhere notice the same selection at your local CT?
 
Big retailers use a metric referred to as “turns” essentially how fast and how often an item turns over in stock.
Remember the phrase “there’s no money is stock”?!?!

If it’s an older slightly obscure cartridge or a slow mover don’t expect your local Canadian Tire to carry it, because it doesn’t fit the quick turn over metric. In other words such practices go against their business model.

Thinking a Canadian Tire is a be all end all sporting goods shoppe is failed thinking.

My apologies to those Franchises owned by enthusiasts.

There was a recent post about a CanT that was slightly colourful regarding the knowledge of the employees. In the responses someone mentioned having been a CanT owner in the past and they mentioned that each owner does their own stocking choices.
A few years back at the height of the primer shortage, a local to me CanT in Surrey wrangled a significant stock of primers. The guy that runs the sporting department at that store does an incredible job of it and somehow carries a good selection. However the CanT that is even closer to me has virtually nothing.. well almost.. but BassP is across the street so why would they bother. Cheers
 
CanadianTire is/was never go to store for ammo.
It was only back when they were the only shop opened on Sunday's and we had a hankering to go and shoot clays of which they had plenty and a decent supply of WinAA's.
As for corporate dictating what to carry I seriously doubt it.
Just my .05 worth of TACO'S inflation/tariff threat.
 
The individual store is responsible for ordering what they want.
The flagship store in south Edmonton used to have a decent selection of fine shotguns…. They don’t move fast here, so mostly Turkish now, that guy doesn’t work there anymore. Still have good rifles, decent amount of (overpriced) reloading supplies.

I agree: the Leduc CT is insane and not just for firearms.
 
On the other side of the coin a friend dropped by Bass Pro Shop in Moncton, NB. He was surprised to see a large amount of 375 h&h, 416 Rigby and 458 Win mag. If you're marketing for quick turnover the big bores would probably disappoint in the Maritimes.

I have to disagree with this comment as back in the 70's our Canadian Tire was one of the best places to buy ammo including all types of hunting gear. They had a great selection and especially around hunting season. I still miss those days when you could buy CIL shotgun shells by the case in 2-3/4" or 3" and CIL 22 rounds. I'm happy I was able to live and see this when I was young and sure do miss it.

This is what keeps Ross in business. The amount of ammo stock alone that he carries is immense.

Yup .... I remember marching into a Home Hardware In Southern Ont in the early 70s with my grandfather and buying a M94 off the shelf just like I was buying a hammer or paint. Same in Ellwood Epps.

The voter shift to urbanization and diversity has changed all that.

I do apologize..
I should have been more specific about CT.
CT in the mighty metropolis of Richmond BC to be specific .
Back in the day Mail Order was the Amazon or Temu of the day and CT along with Sears and Woodwards and Eatons all provided a valueable service.

I asked our local guy if he could bring some reloading bulletts in and he told me they only stock what korth sends them. I don’t know who actually runs the place because it’s a dedicated ct outdoor store and there’s an army of Filipino ladies there and two really young white guys behind the gun counter.

Maybe they have an agreement with Korth on distribution and Korth is holding the bag for the stock? Maybe he was just giving me some lip service. He’s a nice kid, but there’s nobody there with any level of experience.
 
At least you guys have guns… our ct doesn’t carry anything other than factory ammo, a descent selection of it but that is all they carry!! And we have only one gun store in the Yukon!!

All their firearms stuff goes through Korth, I have met the salesman who maintains their supply from them .
Kinda sux that way.

Doesn't Hougan's carry ammo and anything for loading any more? Seems they did when I was there last.
