Thought I'd share my latest project.

I bought an original Mauser Oberndorf Sporter Model B from a member who was across the country. Before buying it, I was told it was in decent shape. When it showed up... well, that wasn't exactly the case. The bore was pretty rough, it was chambered in 8x57J, the front sight was literally held in with a piece of tinfoil wedged under it, and there were a few other "surprises." I was pretty disappointed, especially considering what I'd paid. To make matters worse, the seller ghosted me afterwards.

That said, it was my first original Oberndorf sporter, and I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. After staring at it in the safe for a couple of months, I figured if it wasn't going to be an original collector piece, I might as well turn it into something I'd actually enjoy shooting.

I decided on the 10.75×68 (.423 Mauser). It's one of those classic cartridges that's mostly been forgotten, but I've always loved its history. Plus, who doesn't like a big-bore Mauser? I also already have a 404 Jeffery.

Getting everything together took a bit of digging. I sourced CH4D dies, Bertram brass, Woodleigh load data, and bullets came from my .404 Jeffery stash, along with a few 347-grain Woodleighs I'd been hanging onto.

There's still a bit left to do—mostly refinishing the stock—but I'm really happy with how it's coming together. The original factory peep sight is still there and pops off easily if I want to use the express sights. Up front I installed a now-discontinued NECG Holland & Holland-style front sight with the flip-up night bead, which I think suits the rifle perfectly.

I've only cycled dummy rounds so far, but the rifle feeds like an absolute dream.

Now comes the fun part: working up loads, getting it to the range, and finally taking this old Oberndorf back into the field where it belongs.

Unique round & rifle. I load my .416 Rigby at reduced levels in line with 10.75 x 68 ballistics, 400gr @ ~2000 fps mv & 350gr @ ~2200 fps mv.

I've seen the 10.75 x 68 write up in the Woodleigh Bullets Reloading Manual, that's about the extent of my knowledge of this round. I've heard of the .43 Spanish Mauser, I thought mistakenly the .423 Mauser is a variation.

It's funny how these ugly ducklings that arrive in the mail sometimes turn out to be guns we end up loving. Would also be interested in hearing what you did/ will do with the barrel.
Yup. I still have the original barrel, ill probably see if someone out there wants to trade for it. If not itll sit around until maybe I can see if someone can rebore it

Why didn't you leave feedback?

Not long ago, I came across one in original configuration in good condition. It was rather well priced to (around 1500$) but it's not a cartridge I'm looking to add to the fold so I passed. Had it been a 7x57 or 8x57 then it probably would have come home with me.

I've been in possession of this gun and shot it and it cut a solid 10 inches at 25 yards, not counting the round that didn't hit the paper. You do not want this barrel lol

10.75x68 is a very cool cartridge. Friend used to have a Mauser sporter with octagonal barrel. The 347gr bullets had a mixed reputation on elephant but it seemed to do well on everything else. It’s also not a stretch for the 10.75 to get 400gr bullets to original .404 or .450/.400 velocities of around 2150fps, with modern powders.

Yes exactly. Ive heard the woodleigh 347 gr bullets are good. Being an open sighted rifle i dont think whatever i shoot will be able to tell haha
