M1 Garand Reloads

Nice to see the Garand "thing" come up again!. Put a few hundred rounds through mine over the years. My load was a mid range load of 4064 over 165gr Horn. SPs

Aylmer Gun Club used to host an event called Blast Off. I used to try and attend every year. One of stages was called "Blast Off" As many rounds at 100yds in 2 minutes as you could get off on a a score target. Garand shooters had an advantage with our 8 round enblocs.

I had 40rds down range in less than a minute and a half, The old lady's hand guard started to smoke! I just laid her down. No need for that kind of abuse.
General Patton said it best!

Got myself a Norinco M14 for that event. Handicapped by the 5 round pinned mags but I didn't mind abusing it (a little).

Too bad I can't be trusted with it now!

You can also use a 5 round enbloc to hunt with
But can you tho...The regs still state" semi-auto firearm that can hold more than 5 rounds" and your Garand is still capable of holding 8. The wording in the regs has changed in the last 3 years to be a little more ambivalent but you may convince a roadside stop cop but will a judge in a courthouse side with you...will a bent-up enbloc override the "firearm" description in the regs.
They have even muddied the water with the new wording for shotgun capacity for migratory bird hunting...used to say "must be plugged to prevent loading more than 2 rounds in a magazine"...now no mention of a "plug" being sufficient, it just states "magazine must not hold more than 2 rounds and every magazine I know of on a pump or semi will hold 5 total

The clip is the "magazine blocked to hold no more than 5 rounds" part. The "no more than 2 rounds in the magazine" refers to shotguns. - dan- dan

Again...but is it tho, the regs state "FIREARM CAPABLE of holding more than 5 rounds" and soon as that bent-up 5 rounder enbloc goes "ping" your rifle will still be "capable of holding 8"...splitting hairs semantics i know but judges are famous for exacting semantics.

With no enbloc it's only capable of holding one round....... manually loaded into the chamber.

Not this sh!t again.

Tell you what. Since you're the one hand wringing over this, why don't you find a case somewhere in this commie land where a hunter was charged for hunting with 5 round clips in a Garand? Show us how the rest of us have had this wrong for 50+ years.

If that was the case every pump shotgun in the land is illegal to hunt with. - dan

I dont write the regs-just read'm and try to understand them as best I can and if that tells me in english so be it!!
Dan, that is exactly what the new wording leaves me to believe is a correct assumption.

Thats real astute!! that 8 rounder can be inserted as easily as that 5 rounder you defend....do you know the meaning of "capable"??
In that case then pinned mags would also be illegal, since you can just insert a full capacity mag instead, right? After all, the magwell will accept any size mag you want to put in it and that is 'capable of holding more than 5 rounds' based on your definition. My AR's are all capable of holding 30 rounds, since any mag will go into the gun, but they aren't considered illegal because of that.

As Dan said, the clip is integral to the magazine system. When you use a 5 round clip that magazine is limited to 5 rounds and no more, the same as when a box mag is pinned to 5.

If you were hunting and had a 5 round clip in the gun and an 8 round clip in your pocket, then you would be in trouble. If you only have 5 round clips on you then that is equivalent to having only pinned mags on you and is perfectly legal.

Your assumption literally means that every single tube fed shotgun is now illegal for hunting. They aren't, so I guess we can assume your assumption is wrong. - dan

Really a poor argument choice here Mat, The pined mag law is a mag law not an Ab hunting rifle reg ...same with the AR, totally illegal to hunt with in Canada so both are so irrelevant and far from the reality of this argument.
Same with an embloc...holds 8 rounds and requires no pin to be legal but will still fit in the rifle and usable as such...to further this, Paul claims an un-embloced
Garand will only hold one round...wrong, I will bet him his Garand that i can put 8 rounds inside that rifle without using an embloc. I fully agree that it will only work for one round and will unload the last 7 rounds when the action works but that makes no difference in the "capable of holding" aspect of the reg wording.

I will agree with you that "historically" you are right but with the new wording being used I certainly dont.
I would love to be proven wrong here by you or anybody that can find a reference to a modified or plugged mag tube given a deference to how the regs are worded now...pls do!!!

The hunting regs say no more than 5 rounds to hunt with, regardless of what the legal capacity is in federal law. Those are not the same thing. I can hunt with an Akdas Alcor but I can't use a 10 round LAR pistol mag to do it, even though that mag is perfectly legal according to federal law.

I simply used the AR as a convenient example, you can extrapolate that to any box mag fed semi-auto unless your imagination is too limited to do such a thing.

Dan, pls I did try to justify your argument by transferring to a 30 Carbine that I have used to hunt with and basically now, it and your Alcor fall under the wording "capable of holding" that captures the Garand ....so, like, like Dan, prove me wrong with
regs wording that indemnifies bent en-blocks or other plugging methods pls.

There isn't anything that will satisfy your anxiety. You would be best off hunting with a single shot, that will keep you out of trouble and the rest of us will carry on as we have for the past 50+ years.

Well if they arrest half the duck hunters next month I guess we'll know. - dan

30 carbine is prohibited by name. Not because the mag holds x amount of cartridges. - dan

Well....Im gonna eat a little crow here, after a conversation with another gunny over this topic, I am tempering my position on the legalities of the wording in the regs.
His take on the definition of "magazine is that the tube isnt the magazine...the actual magazine by proper definition is the empty space in the tube and if you "plug it to hold 2 rounds" you are filling the magazine, making the wording actually appropriate.
