Hello all:

I got what is probably a dumb question re: the receiver of a Mosin 91/30. I've just bought my 2nd M91/30 with a 3rd on the way, each from a different dealer. The reason for buying 3 was that a quick glance of the ads seamed to indicate that the Mosin was made with a round; hexagon or octagon receiver and I wanted one of each.

Now I'm happy with both rifles that I received, but both my hexagon and octagon M91/30 are the same. They both have rounded bottoms (the part buried in the wood), where as the sides and top follow the shape of the octagon. I presume that the dealer I ordered the hexagon M91/30 from shipped me by mistake (I'm still happy with rifle) an octagon rifle, or am I miss-understanding what is meant by a round, hex and octagon M91/30.

Cheers
Mark
PS anyone know a good Mosin book, something like the "Bren Gun Saga"?

"Hex" means 6
"Octo" means 8

That's why the Romans called their 8th month OCTOber and their tenth month DECEMber and so forth, with New Year's in March (named for Mars).

The thing's profile is such that it shoulda had 8 sides.

A post-1930 with an octagonal receiver is an older rifle which has been rebuilt. Big thing with MNs is that all the dating, factory info and so forth was on the barrel; change the barrel and you have a "new" rifle, even though the frame might be a century old.

They can be a lotta fun to play with.

Hey, even I can own a Tikka at this kind of price!!!!!

Hex = six sided
Oct = eight sided

I have three 1891 and one 1891/30. All Hexagon, not a perfect hexagon mind you. The top of the receiver has three equal sides above the wood. Then there is the flat botton and two slightly rounded sides for a total of six. Not all sides are equal.

And by the way, a polygon is a dead parrot. :)

Thanks guys. It sounds like the problem is that the top 3 sides if the patern continued would form a perfect octagon (8 sided), but the rounding on the bottom results in it only having 6 sides, so its an hexagon. So again to every one thanks, Now I'm off to 7.62x54R.net to learn more.
Cheers

Not necessarily. "New" hex receivers were still being used on the 91/30 until circa 1936 because large numbers of new receivers from the 1891 series were still available. Russia never throws out a weapon. Or parts.
