ring height questions

I recently ordered a 30 mm scope tube with a 50 mm objective lens. I'm trying to order scope rings but am at a loss for which height.
Rifle is a savage mark 2 FV. Heavy barrel. Standard two piece bases.
I'd like to keep the scope as low as possible as I'm going to put it in a chassis

Medium-high for hvy BBL - possibly high if your chassis has a top rail and/or you need room for scope caps

In my experience medium is ok for anything under #5 barrel contour. There are variables, and yes, certainly best to measure.

Easiest way to measure is to stack coins or shims between scope and receiver/rail and once desired height is reached measure your stack of shims.

I did some rough measuring from my 300 wm savage that wears a 50 mm objective and guesstimated the taper of the barrel. I ordered the .35" rings instead of the .55" and they work. I did have to cut the bikini cover

It’s really difficult to say for sure because it somewhat depends on scope eye relief and cheek weld which are specific to you.

My recommendation (to take the trial and error out of it) is to take the gun and scope to a good gun store and they will let you try multiple ring options until you find the perfect clearance.

The rings on my fvsr and 50mm obj are low. My cap clears the barrel by just enough. My fv and 50mm has med rings that arent too high for me either.
A chassis should let you adjust height for comfort. I certainly advocate for as close to bore mounting but forcing your cheek down gets old real fast.
Order both sizes. Keep one.
