Benelli M4 Trigger Group Retention Pin pops out

My new Benelli M4, when cycling the bolt closed or firing a round, the cross pin that secures the entire trigger assembly to the receiver pops out approximately 1mm. It makes an audible click when I push it back so the head of the pin sits flush against the receiver.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is this something I need to just live with. It’s annoying me since it’s a new premium firearm.

Nope, it should stay locked in the closed position. It takes the charging handle to pop it out of the locked position, usually finger pressure isn't enough to pop it out. Make sure the spring detente is in the right place?

I'd also look at the pin and make sure there is a nice well formed groove under the head of the cross pin.

You can take the little C-clip out and make sure the spring that holds the pin in place is in good shape as per the pics. It may have broken or bent and isn't holding spring tension properly.

Thanks F22, I didn’t realize there was a spring underneath that snap ring. I’ll have a look. There’s a Reddit feed I recently saw that says this 1mm play is a common occurrence and within tolerances.

The same way the snap ring has a groove that it sits in, iirc the e-clip that acts as the detente spring has a little groove that it sits in as well , if it's not seated all the way around, or if there's a burr it may want to push the pin out so that it doesn't sit flush. The plastic bushing should press it in, but I think there's some movement room.

It may also be that the groove in the pin itself isn't in the right spot which makes it want to sit out, which I don't think there's anything you can do to fix that, unfortunately.

Measuring from the outside of the pin head to the centre of the groove is 6.25mm on mine, so that should give you an idea if yours is different, it would be a little longer than that if it's not wanting to sit flush.

No worries! I guess at the end of the day as long as the pin stays locked in place all it does is hold the trigger group in place, so it's not like it's a critical issue, but I definitely understand! It would bug me too. I would 100% make a new one or modify it if that was the case on mine

I suppose it's possibly somewhere along the line they changed the specs so if some dirt or dust got in there it wouldn't prevent it from locking in place and securing the trigger group.

To remove the pin entirely do I first remove the snap ring?

I’m waiting on stoeger warranty but if that fails I’ll need to take the pin out entirely to examine that spring that seats into the receiver under the bushing and snap ring.

Yes, snap ring comes out first, it's not that hard to get out, a pair a needle nose pliers or even beefy tweezers. Then the little plastic spacer usually falls out or tap the opposite side of the receiver. Then you can use a pin punch or something to push the spring away from the cross pin and then it pulls right out. The spring will pull out with a pair of needle nose pliers

I've owned my M4 for many years now, hundreds and hundreds of rounds cycled through. I never noticed until now, but yes mine does the same thing. 1mm and a click. Called a buddy, same on his. never had any issues. Just shoot it. Stoeger will tell you this is normal.

I’ve seen evidence that it’s very common. Seems like a simple fix.
