Is there a Fwt that doesn't heat up

Hold on Joel. There are heat treaments that can be done to barrels to stop them from changing point of impact when they get hot. They aren't cheap, and I don't know if anyone in Canada does this treatment, but it is available in the US.

No, I'm not going on about Cryogenics.

A few years ago, when I ordered the last factory profiled barrels from Shilen in the US, one of the options listed on the form was heat treating. I hadn't seen it before, so I called them and asked what it was, and they told me it was a special heat treatment to stop shifting harmonics caused by increased heat during firing long strings at the range, and for Varmint shooters.

I didn't order the treatments because the people paying for the rebarreling, didn't feel they needed the rather expensive option.

WL, your Mod 70Win, FWT barrel did not get this special heat treatment at the factory. To my knowledge it's not a factory option either.

For someone in your line of work, that rifle may not be what you need on the job, especially if you're in a "cull" situation and the shots are fast and close together.

The FWT type rifles are not meant for this type of shooting, and most will not do it well.

Many decades ago, I was involved in a domestic sheep cull. The fellow who owned them went broke, then walked away from the flock, which went wild. Some died in the winter, when their coats froze together, and they were easy pickings for the Coyotes, but most of them survived.

There were close to a hundred animals, in all stages of health.

The realtor, who bought the property at auction, tried to find someone to come in and take the animals.

No takers, mostly because it was a difficult place to get to, and there were concerns about disease.

The animals were a nuisance to the surrounding farms/ranches, so the MOE hired a friend and myself to "reduce" the flock to "0" animals, and remove the carcasses.

It took a four days, because they were no longer tame, and human contact for the past couple of years was not happy experience, and a poor choice on our part for rifles.

The shots were anywhere from 50-300 meters, and usually there would be at least a half dozen animals together.

We both used Rem Mod 7 rifles, chambered for 243Win, with factory, wood stocks, and Leupold 2x7 scopes, shooting handloads.

The cartridge choice was just about perfect for the job, but those pencil barrels were a big negative, and a job that should have taken a day at most, turned into four days of hiking over brushy, steep terrain, because of lack of consistent accuracy after the first couple of shots from each rifle.

The Mod 7s would have been fine for a sporting Deer or Bear hunt, but not for a cull.

What I do know here is I've had a couple rifles that just continue to shoot good groups of 10 or even more rounds. Tikkas don't have a super thick barrel. And I've got a 15 shot group from a Sauer 100 XT (ok thats a bit more substantial) 3 handloads in increments thats under 2"

BTW when I say "good" with the Tikka and 8-10 round groups I mean 1.5-1.6 MOA, but if you just say "oh, those were flyers" or shoot a 3 shot group, obviously better haha.

Tikka does heat treat their barrels, but they're one of few.

Many bench rest shooters only use heat treated barrels. Mostly it's not needed for a hunting rifle, unless it's for a spray and pray type of hunt.

Yeah , there's no "culling" with said fwt my man, I'm not sure where that came from but since 2020, (big fires) I don't cull #### nor shoot FK all either.

I've owned probably a half dozen featherweight barreled rifles. All heat up quick. As for heat treating, I've worked with it on engine blocks and locomotive frames, can't say I've ever seen it applied to a rifle barrel, but the theory should hold. - dan
Heat up quick to the point, will you shoot a string of 3 for a load development? Or wait in between for a while?

Mostly I do 3 round groups. Sort of gives me the best and worse, if those three stay within my limits (depending what rifle and which game), I am satisfied. For a while I was doing cold bore groups, shoot one, move to the next rifle, repeat. I had a lot of rifles at the time, and usually took a half dozen or so to the range, so it wasn't a long boring wait. I figured the first cold bore shot was the most important, with one follow up if required. Got some nice groups that way, though it took a long time. - dan

I shot two loads. Two rounds each.

Superb.

130gr Corelokt re load.
And a 150gr Hot cor load.

There is 3 MOA difference between the Two, but I'm happy with that.

Will continue to repeat this same POI in future.
(My first shot of day to the R) So more a ME than IT worry.

And im almost getting certain that the heat is not helping me one i o ta .

this gun will never shoot 3 rounds in a row at Game, maybe 2 and a coup de grace scenerio - so im going to continue to keep 2 shot groups and cool circumstances , in the mornings an not so much in the afternoons where it is quite warm to begin with- for development
 
Factory stock barrels have never been to-my-liking, hence the year 2000. Short thin barrels will cause, muzzle-jump, additional recoil, rapid heat, less velocity, and inaccurate groups. It's been 26 years that I have custom barrels, all have the opposite symptoms of the aforementioned.

Just heat itself can effect accuracy of a barrel, with everything else remaining constant. The diameter of your barrel will Infact increase with heat, especially alot of heat. While this number may seem extremely small, it still does play on all the internal ballistics before your bullet even leaves the barrel. You might not notice it at closer ranges, but you stretch it out, and it will be more noticable. Everything changes at temperature changes, your coefficient of friction also changes dramatically with large temperature shifts. So alot more than just a stock touching or other rifle problems. Stresses built up in your barrel change with temperature, less if they have been stress relived but alot of barrels aren't.
 
I carried a 270WBY years ago for speed goat/ mulie hunting in southern Sask. It was a factory 24" #1 barrel. Very hot to touch after 3 quick rounds. First shot cold was always within 1" MOA. 3 shot rapid groups 2-3". As mentioned for hunting that first shot accuracy was what counted. Took this mulie at 500+ yards with that rifle, my longest kill shot.

i had one yesterday as i was just walking along near my shed, im not a very good shot on a good day- my targets show that story, but i dont miss and say f!k that was because it wasnt a 3 shot sub MOA load!
have shot a few now so definatly over thinking it - but realised its good to go and get amongst it
 
Got the Interbonds to print a nice group today on my Second charge attempt.

pretty much Max load of 4350, seated to the cannelure , in Nickel WIN brass - hot hard and going to be looking forward to using them on big deer in the future-

cold bore and then waited less than 4 minutes and shot again-

after that second shot, its 'hot' , without doubt. i tested this with some corelokt loads aswell.
