looking forward to all bird hunting
I started hunting birds in 1968 and still chasing them today at a much much slower pace

stocked up on 20g #6 for opening day.

Get a 28 gauge, you can swat one on the ground and when the rest fly away you can swat one out of the sky.
Can't do that with a 22.

28 is my gun of choice also. Best gauge ever made for upland. 20 sometimes 12 for ducks and geese just because I find there is more options for steel shot ammo.

First year going hunting with my own gun! Last year only got out on the very last day of the season, and didnt bother bringing the 12g as I thought itd leave more feathers then meat, so the cooey should work perfectly this year! Going out the opening day, and halfway through so hopefully shouldnt get skunked like last year! Oct. 1st cant possibly get here fast enough!

What size shot should I use ?
Also I’m pretty sure I can shoot other than lead shot through that ?
