i have a Mossberg 590a1 with the 20" barrel and it is a fun gun and but it's just kind of big and long ... i wonder if the 14" 590a1 would be too short or if the 18.5" 590a1 would be not short enough? i am also eyeing the Benelli SuperNova 3 Tactical with the telescoping stock in the 14" and 18.5" -- the lighter weight and collapsible stock seem like big wins for portability. if i get a shorter shotgun, i would sell the 20" 590a1, don't think i want to start a shotgun collection, ideally want one shotgun for everything for life. i do remote backcountry trips on canoe and foot, would be cool to have a firearm in case bearspray fails or runs out; maybe shooting a rabbit or bird for dinner; i also like the idea of a 12ga for "home defense". any advice or wisdom ?

I have owned all three lengths of 590a1's - they all have merit but 18.5 might be the sweet spot.

14" is compact but has more recoil and blast.

20" is the nicest to shoot because of its size and weight soaking up recoil along with the extra capacity but the added length.

The 18" splits them with benefits of both.
