Mossberg 590 vs. 590A1?

Factory S or aftermarket solution for short shell - either one would add plastic parts and make quite perfected system more complicated and increase the probability of malfunction in the long run. Unless you really want to shoot short shells specifically out of this gun, don't convert and don't buy S version.

I thought the "S" version just had a modified, metal, liftgate?

I don't have S version, though planning to get one so kids could shoot pump too. And then will get rid of it. As I understand there's some kind of polymer bumper to address the slingshot effect of feeding of shorties. Also bolt slide and shell elevator were changed.
It's more like - if you introduce the changes to accommodate new feature you always introduce additional reliability risks and increase complexity.

for me the ghost ring on the 590A1 is just fine. Really good actually for slugs.
I love iron sights, but my eyes no longer work well with them, so the red dot is the way of the future for me.

What are you using it for?
Shooting steel at the range, general plinking/fun shooting stuff and carrying for bears and wilderness protection if I'm out and about. Sounds like the 590 is the gun for me. I'm not going into combat, nor will I be using it as a pry bar, so the heavier barrel just seems wasted on me.

- LARP factor. How am I going to pretend clear my home after watching YouTube videos and witnessing the cesspool that is the comments section on how everyone is doing it wrong - with anything less than a 590A1.
I already have a 14" 590 for that. I like it so much I'm looking at the longer barrel versions as well.

Actually, while not a legit comparison they made another video demonstrating the sad story about factory solution and came up with their own cartridge arrestor specifically for 590s. So it is gonna be like 590s+. Worth watching.

Is there a metal safety and metal trigger guard to put on the basic 590 ?
Or after market metal ?
Yes. I personally like Defender Tactical stuff for Mossbergs, and my 590A1 wears what I consider an upgraded safety from them. For the trigger guard, you'll likely have to go OEM and contact your local Mossberg dealer for a factory guard.

This is a great topic. I absolutely love these shotguns. Here's the big differences in my opinion:

A1 has a metal trigger guard where every base 590 I have seen has a plastic one
A1 has a metal safety selector
A1 will usually be Parkerized while many regular 590s are blued
A1 has a heavier walled barrel

Both have numerous factory configurations but the stock, pump, receiver and action are essentially the same level of "heavy duty"ness if comparing the equivalent 590 and 590A1.

Both have the clean out style mag tube which is an upgrade from the 500.

Both are duty grade, military issued, and will outlast the owner in the case of a normal guy.

Based on use case here would be my recommendation:

If it's for home defense or predator defense - it's common for people to buy the 14in 590 shockwave with raptor grip and then put the Magpul buttstock on. So you get the light weight and tight handling of the 14 inch barrel but still get a proper stock.

If you want large capacity or a fast reload - The 590RM has great ergos and detachable magazines with up to 20 round capacity and because the mag is OEM and only fits in these shotguns we can have the full capacity.

For competitive use - depends on what you are doing. If you're just shooting slugs and moving quick, I'd pick the 590 since it has decent capacity and less weight than the A1. If you need a choke, the A1 model 50774 has interchangeable chokes. Could be worth looking at.

If it's for serious tactical use - The A1 is great. Super heavy duty, and can be somewhat high capacity with the 20in barrel and 9 shot factory tube. In this environment I'd say the extra weight is worthwhile in exchange for the durability.

If its for cool factor/collecting - Pick the one with your favorite look and ergos! Any 500, 590, 590A1 is a quality shotgun that will almost certainly be extremely reliable.
My 410 mossburg 590 I got the shockwave version and put the adapter on it so I can use the AR 15 pistol grip, buffer tube and rear stock with it and it is awesome

As much as I love the 590a1 my personal choice is the 590, preferably in the Retrograde package. I just find for me personally the 590 is a quicker transitioning and more enjoyable shotgun than the 590a1, that probably wouldn’t be the case if I were a 190lbs or over, but at 150lbs I appreciate the lighter 590 for sure

In the metal vs polymer trigger guard debate, it would be interesting to know the %of users that broke the plastic one, and then "upgraded" to metal? My guess is that the percentage of Mossberg 5_ _ owners that has happened to is less than 1%. Probably far less. Same is probably true of people with standard-weight shotgun barrels who had damage or a failure, and now "have to have an A1".

Just saying it would foolish to suggest that the non-A1 barrels are bad, weak or problematic. They haven't been for countless "duty" shotguns, and sure wouldn't be an issue for most of us weekend warriors. Buy/shoot what you want...I have no need for an 88 in my life for the record..but no knocking they're THE modern/budget workhorse shotgun. I think Mossberg's overactive marketing dept. did them no favours by introducing the 590 in between the 500 and 590A1.

Mossberg has beefed up the tabs at the front of the plastic trigger assembly , that was a weak point, although rare, they could shear off with hard aggressive use over time.
Quickest way to tell a older gun is a square ejection port, new ones are rounded.
As for the heavy barrel, you'll see more standard barrel 500's in military use then anything else , take that for what it's worth

The 590A1 Retro is one of my beloveds. It's heavy though. Certainly not something to take fowling. A slug gun for deer though and you'd be challenged to get better. I have an 835 ulti-mag that wears an optic, for me the ghost ring on the 590A1 is just fine. Really good actually for slugs.

For me, I'll almost always spend a little more for the upgraded gun and live with no regrets. To spend all that money and knowing that a little more would have secured the better gun, would always leave me wanting. YMMV.
The retro is a beaut, that's for sure.
